2012 Porsche 911 Carrera is a new incarnation of the iconic 911, which will be revealed at next year’s Frankfurt motor show by Porsche. The company is expecting to win back traditional customers in the face of tough super-car competition and reaffirm its future under the guise of parent company. The new 911 Carrera, which is the next generation of the iconic rear-engine sports car will be cleaner, leaner, meaner, easier on gas, and even more agile.

The new 911 Carrera will head further up-market from its recent positioning and let Porsche to reshuffle its model line-up in readiness for the introduction of a new entry-level mode, to be developed in partnership with VW. In October 2011, Codenamed 991, the heavily re-engineered coupé and cabriolet are set to go on sale in the UK. They will get freshened exterior styling, a higher-quality interior, more powerful yet highly fuel-efficient six-cylinder boxer engines, sharpened dynamics and a greater list of high-end options.

Big changes has been traditionally made to the 911 every second generation by Porsche, and today’s 997 is regard as a heavily face-lifted version of its predecessor, the new 991 has been developed from a clean sheet of paper. Weissach engineers are expecting that its features will let it to continue through to the next model, due in 2017, without any significant or costly modifications.

Porsche 911 Carrera is already going through road-testing, although it is not expected in Europe until late 2011 and in America until early 2012. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera is codenamed 991 and it has the huskier look is a new three-element front fascia with a larger center grille. The lineup of new 911 is a base S-model packing a downsized 3.4-liter version of the evergreen horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder power-plant. Despite less displacement, the 3.4 reportedly makes 350 horsepower, up five from the current base Carrera's 3.6-liter unit.

New Carrera RS is replacing today's S-model. It uses the same 3.8-liter engine, but with 15 horses added from 2009 tune to make a nice, round 400. Torque outputs slide a bit, down by eight lb-ft to 280 for the 3.4 and by 15 lb-ft to 295 for the 3.8. Even so, a substantial weight drop at least 130 pounds by our reckoning should yield slightly better acceleration times, plus better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. While it is still way too early for precise numbers, sources hint RS models will scale 0-60 mph in about four seconds. Transmissions will again comprise a standard 6-speed manual and the optional PDK.

The predicted mass reduction for the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera stems from more-extensive use of carbon-fiber, plastic composites, and other lightweight materials, a result of lessons learned with the late mid-engine V10 Carrera GT super-car.

Price: Carreras will cost $3,000 higher than comparable 2009 models. That would lift the base coupe to near $79,000 and the base Cabriolet to $89,200, with up-power and all-wheel-drive versions ranging from the mid-$90,000s to low $100,000s.
