The island of Taiwan was struck by a 6.5-magnitude earthquake on 26 April 2010 morning. However, immediate reports of casualties or damage were not reported so far. According to the service of the U.S. Geological Survey, “The quake occurred at 10.59 local time (2.59 GMT). It was centered in the Pacific Ocean, 190.4 kilometers east of the island and about 10 kilometers deep”.
Throughout the island of Taiwan, the quake was felt, in the districts of Taitung, Hualien, Ilan, Chiayi and Taichung, it was of three degrees magnitude and two degrees in Taipei. “The quake hit off the city of Taitung,” said by the U.S. Geological Survey. Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan said, “No tsunami warning was issued and Buildings persuaded in Taipei, the capital, for up to 20 seconds.”
China's state media said on Sunday, “Meanwhile, heavy snow and a sandstorm delayed flights carrying relief supplies and workers to a remote Tibetan region of China trying to recover from a devastating earthquake.” Xinhua News Agency said, “The death toll in the April 14 quake in Yushu County of Qinghai province rose to 2,203, and 73 others are missing.”
Between the provincial capital of Xining and Yushu, all six daily flights were delayed, stranding hundreds of relief workers. Taiwan is struck by many earthquakes but most are small.
