All people are talking about the so-called God Particle after the big announcement from CERN. God Particle was previously recognized as Higgs boson. The God Particle discovery is among the biggest and most important scientific steps or breakthroughs in the modern times. This God Particle sounds important but, what does it actually means is the question that comes in the mind of many people since they don’t have much knowledge when it comes to physics theories. To clear out this mystery, you need to understand its definition, who found it and what its discovery means. Here in this article, you can find all the information about the God Particle which will help you to understand it clearly.
After almost 40 years of search, wherein scientists were working at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), at last on July 4, 2012, they have announced the discovery of the Higgs boson/God Particle. This discovery is made by over 5,000 researchers who were divided into two teams such as ATLAS and CMS. Both the teams reported the existence of Higgs boson independently. Peter Higgs was the first person who proposed the existence of Higgs boson in 1964. The name of the particle is also derived from his name. The nickname “God particle” has been given by physicist Leon Lederman. Higgs boson is the Sub -atomic particle that provides mass to all other particles.
It is the 12th missing piece of the Standard Model of particle physics. Standard Model theory explains how the 12 fundamental building blocks of our universe are put together. The 11 pieces have been already found and now this 12th jigsaw piece makes the puzzle complete which in turn disclose the dark mysteries of the universe. The weight of Higgs boson is around 125 GeV/c2 or around 133 proton masses. Higgs boson is thought to provide size and shape to all matters in the universe. Higgs boson existence will describe how atoms or other huge elementary particles have mass and how the universe is bound collectively.
It is also thought that after the Big Bang, this particle is most important in the formation of planets, stars and life. According to a researcher at FermiLab, all basic particles will be massless without Higgs and the universe will be also very different. Some particles like photons will be not affected by Higgs as they don’t have mass. The discovery of Higgs boson is still at an early stage even though the findings are announced by CERN.
