India’s North Eastern States are one of the mesmerizing parts of the country for traveling and totally different in many ways from other parts of India. North East India states are marked with lots of attractions like adventure activities, hill-stations, wildlife, temples, gardens and museums, etc. October to May is the best time to visit the North East India. North East India part comprises of eight states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura that are famous for their scenic beauty. These states have varied number of triple groups which has their own separate culture. The highest percentages of Christians are living in these states. Hindi, English, Assamese, Garo, Jaintia, Khasi, Bengali, Mizo, Manipuri, Nagamese, Lepcha, Limboo, Bhutia (Sikkimese), Bhutia (Tibetan), and several other local languages are spoken throughout these eight states. The most important festivals of these states are Bihu, Jhum Cultivation, Ke Pemblang, Nongkrem, Durga Puja and Karchi Puja, which reflect the rich socio-cultural life of North-East India.

Covered by powerful Himalayan hills, the whole North-East area has become one of the most beautiful areas in South Asia in terms of attractive huge opportunities of ecotourism. These states are home to lots of wildlife parks such as Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park, which are natural World Heritage Site and also comprise another beautiful attraction like waterfalls and caves. Permission is necessary to travel in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland, but to visit Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura, tourist does need it.

Location:

The North East is a real frontier area. In north-eastern part of India, it lies deep in the lap of easternmost Himalayan hills. It is linked with only 20 km of broad land to rest of India and share more than 2000 km of border with many other countries like China, Tibet, Bhutan, Myanmar & Bangladesh.

Assam

Assam is the entry way to the North East India and state of pleasant contrast and excitement. It is quenched by the strong Brahmaputra River. Each and every part of the state has amazing extraterrestrial and variety to offer. The nature has painted this area with the vibrant landscape, hillocks, woods, brooks and streams, flora and fauna, so it known as a green paradise. Assam is the house of one horned rhino, aromatic tea gardens, blue rivers and red mountains. Dispur is the capital of the Assam. Through centuries dance, music, festivity, woodwork, pottery, sitalpati or the art of mat making have attracted so many tourists to the north east. The main cities of Assam are Dispur, Guwahati, Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Majuli, Hajo, Sibsagar, Tawang and Tezpur. Guwahati:

Guwahati is one of the most important destinations in the whole Northeast. Its natural bed is the most spiritualist land of everlasting blue hills and beautiful rivers, which are famous for its tea and rich plants and fauna. It is famous for Brahmaputra River and Umananda temple, Kamakhya Temple, Assam Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Assam State Museum are best enjoyments for travelers. Kamakhya temple is one of the main attractions of Guwahati located at Nilachal Hill. There are also some other places to visit including State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden, Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Saraighat Bridge, Planetarium, All India Radio, Guwahati Refinery and Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti.

Tezpur is also known as City of Blood (Sonitpur) after a mythological battle between "Hari" and "Hara" for romantic legend of Usha and Anirudha. The main tourist destinations of the Tezpur are Nehru Maidan, Chitralekha Udyan, The Mahabhairav Temple, Agnigarh, Da-Parbatia Bamuni Hills, The Hazara Pukhuri and Cole Park. The city is situated with numerous sanctuaries and reserves such as The Nameri Tiger Reserve, Orang Wildlife Sanctuary, Nameri Sanctuary, and Kaziranga National Park.

Dibrugarh is another main attraction of Assam, visited by large number of tourists throughout the year. Koli Aai Thaan, Barbarua Maidam, Sarumechlow and Bormechow Maidam, Lekai Chetia Maidam, Bahikhowa Maidam, Dehing Satra, Rukmini island are some main attraction in Dibrugarh.

The previous capital of Assam, Sibsagar is “The Ocean of Shiva”. It is famous for tallest Shiva temple, Shivadol. 200 year old Sibsagar tank is the most remarkable landscape of the town. Rang Ghar, Kareng Dhar and Talatal Ghar Gargaon Palace, Jaysagar Tank and Temples, Ajan Pir Dargah Sharif, Charaiadeo, Namdang Stone Bridge, Rudrasagar Tank and Temple and Gaurisagar Tank and Temples are the main tourist attractions of Sibsagar.

Hajo:

Hajo is a Hindu, Muslim & Buddhist Pilgrim centre, located on the northern bank of Brahmaputra. A pilgrimage center is similar for Hindus and Muslims. Hajo is renowned for its temple such as Haya- griva Madhava temple, Powa Mecca, Buddhist Temple, Kedaresvara temple, Joy Durga Temple, Ganesh temple, Dhoparguri Satra, and Kamesware Temple.

Manipur

Manipur is also another entryway of the North-East India. It was also described as “A jeweled land" by Jawaharlal Nehru. It has a scenic tourist destination like Govindajee Temple, Bishnupur, Phubala, Moirang, Keibul Lamjao National Park and Sendra Tourist Home. Manipur's main tourist attraction is Keibul Lamjao National Park which is home to the Brow antlered deer. Loktak Lake (fresh water lake) and the lush green hills make Manipur as dwelling-place for tourists. It is well-known for its rich culture, rare wild life, flowers and sportsmanship. The capital city of Manipur, Imphal has markets like Paona Bazar and Khwairanbam Bazar. Shaheed Minar, War Cemeteries, Khonghampat Orchidarium, Manipur Zoological Gardens, Moirang, Kaina, Khongjom, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul, Manipur State Museum and Red Hill are also some interested places of Mainpur.

The capital city of Manipur, Imphal is a special tourist spot for its paradisiacal surroundings, unique culture and pleasant weather. There are many important attractions in Imphal including Manipur State Museum, Andro, Kaina, Khongjom, Langthabal, Moirang, Manipur Zoological Garden, Phubala, Sahid Minar, Shree Govindajee Temple, War Cemeteries, Khwairamband Bazaar, Khonghampat Orchidarium, Loktak Lake and Sendra Island, Sekta Sekta Mound, Singda, Keibul Lamjao National Park, and The Old Palace.

Bishnupur:

The land of dancing deer, Bishnupur is pleasing town located at the foot hill, famous for the single-celled, conical roofed temple of 15th century, Vishnu temple. Generally, it is popular for its chiseled stoneware. It is most famous for its terracotta temples. You can also visit other temples like Rass Mancha dedicated to Vishnu, Shyam Ray Temple, the twin shrines of Jorbangla, the Radhey Shyam Temple, the Sarbamangala and Chinnamasta. To see Malla dynasty relics visit the Jogesh Chandra Archaeological Centre. Keibul Lamjao National Park, Loktak Lake and Loukoipat Ecological Park are other tourist attractions of this place.

Churachandpur:

Churachandpur is the tribe's motherland, famous for wonderful places for sightseeing and holidaying. India’s huge handycraft market is situated in Churachandpur, so you will find many types of beautiful items made with vibrant colors by locales at Churachandpur. Tonglon cave is the main tourist attractions in Manipur approximately 32 km from Churachandpur.

Tamenglong:

Tamenglong District of Manipur looks sacred with exotic orchids, virgin forests, endangered plants and wildlife. River Barak, Seven waterfalls, Tharon cave, Zeilad Lake at Makoi, Guiphop Zei, Nrou Zei, Nap-sam Zei, The Buning (N-piulong) meadow, and Tamei town are the main places to visit in Tamenglong. Tamenglong is the home to many species of exotic animals and birds. People can see certain species of animals and birds including pheasants, hog deer, wild boars, hyenas, wild dogs and leopards. During winter season, visitors can also see Migrated herds Elephants in Tousem.

Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is the magical and mystical place of the Eastern India. Arunachal Pradesh is also known as the Land of Rising Sun that has many wonders and attractions for travelers. Itanagar, Bomdila, Bhalukpong, Tawang, Basar, and Ziro are main attractions of Arunachal Pradesh. The capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar is situated on top of low flat hills. It is also identified as 'the Land of the Dawnlit Mountains'. It comprises various tourist attractions such as the Polo Park, Buddhist Temple, Ganga Sekhi Lake, Tawang Monastery, Malinithan, Parshuram Kund, and Bomdila. In the Itangar, you must see Jawaharlal Nehru Museum which has extensive ethnological collection of tribal art, tools and objects of worship. You can also purchase handicraft items like Bamboo cane work, ''thankas’, woodcarvings, carpets, local dresses, shawls and sarongs from the Itangar Market.

Bomdila is the capital of west Kameng, sited on height of 2,530 meters. It offers brilliant sight of the Himalayas landscapes and snow clad mountains. It is best known for Buddhist monasteries apple orchards, wild orchids, forests and cascading waterfalls. The major attraction of Bomdila is Ethnographic Museum, which is the perfect place to see the real culture, art and traditions of Arunachal Pradesh. It is also popular for its craft center, from where you can buy exclusive and lovely carpets in different designs and colors.

Bhalukpong:

Bhalukpon, indentified as Tipi is best attraction for mountain lovers with ability for trekking, rafting and angling. Its viewpoint like turbulent water falls, perennially fresh forests, and lavish expanse offers chance for photo adventure. Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, Tipi Orchidarium which hosts more than 2600 cultivated orchids from 80 different kinds, and Kaziranga National Park are sightseeing near Bhalukpong. The principal tourist activities in Bhalukpong are Fish angling and river rafting.

Tawang is a Buddhist Pilgrimage site and birth place of sixth Dalai Lama. It is the home of Sherdukpen tribes and Monpa with ancient monastery, Dragon gates, hundred pristine lakes and numerous waterfalls. The real riches of the place are the soggy, rocky mountains, snowcapped summits and old Monasteries. Sangetser Lake and Banggachang Lake are the main tourist spots of the place.

Meghalaya

Meghalaya is one of the most picturesque states of North East India; abound in crystal clear lakes, beautiful hills, picturesque scenery, dazzling waterfalls, orchids and exotic butterflies, exotic flora and fauna and fresh air which make it ideal to spend your vacation. It is the best place for adventurous spirit people due to undulating hills, snaking river and thrilling wildlife. Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, Ward's Lake and Elephanta falls can enthrall any tourist. The capital of Meghalaya is a hill station marked with charming valleys, huge mountains, and lovely lush parks. It is the main attraction of Meghalaya. It has wonderful waterfalls and lakes, green mountains and forests. Lady Hydari Park, Shillong Peak, Museum of Entomology, Golf Links, Waterfalls, and Ward's Lake are the main tourist attraction of the place. Some other attractions of the place are Cherrapunjee (Sohra), Sohpetbneng Peak, Umiam Lake, Botanical Garden, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian, Bishop and Beadon Falls, Elephant Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Sweet Falls and Crinoline Falls. One of the main attractions of Meghalaya is Ward’s Lake which is man made lake decorated with aligned flowerbeds and sand stone paths.

Cherrapunjee:

Cherrapunjee is known to get the maximum amount of rainfall in the world. It is famous for limestone caves and orange honey. India’s fourth highest fall, Mawsmai Falls is situated in this city. Khasi monoliths is also situated in Cherrapunjee with the beautiful labyrinth under the ancient caves. Khasi monoliths is the must visit site for the nature lovers and environment explorers. Mawlong peak, known for the David Scott memorial, Mawlong caves, majestic waterfall of Noh-sngithiang, Thangkarang Park are some other destination of this place.

Mawsynram:

Mawsynram is another place to visit in the Meghalaya, known for the Huge Stalagmite Creation Shaped like a Shivalinga. Mizoram’s cities are wrapped by the powerful spiritualist mountains, rare flora and fauna and thick bamboo forests. It is the house of everlasting blue hills and beautiful rivers. The main travel destinations of the state are Aizawl (Capital), Tamdil (Lake) and Phawngpui (Mizoram’s highest peak). It is well-known for tribal people’s art and crafts and bamboo cultivation. The various tour destinations in Aizwal are The State Museum at Babu Tlang, The Cultural Sub-Center, Zoological Garden, Bung Picnic Spot, MAHCO Showroom, Treasury Square, Vengthlang, Bethlehem, Bara Bazar, and Luangmual Handicrafts Center. One can also visit the Durtlang Hills, Berawtlang Tourist Complex, Pukzing caves, Tamdil Lake and Rungdil Lake for scenic outdoor charms.

Phawngpui:

The Phawngpui, Mizoram is famous for theorchids and rhododendrons of the Blue Mountain, which is located on the Kolodyne river bank. The peak of Phawngpui is the highest mountain of the Mizoram state rising to a height of about 2165 meters. It gives a myth view of the blue hazed hills, and vales unfolding beneath with amazing trees and flowers of all colors.

Champhai:

Champhai is one of the oldest and bustling commercial towns at the Indo-Myanmar border. It gives a beautiful view of the Myanmar hills. Many tourists are attracted by its pleasant climate, picturesque charm, riotous rice fields and green hillocks. Kungawrhi Puk (cave), Tiau Lui (River), Rih Dil (Lake), Lianchhiari Lunglen Tlang (Cliff), Thasiama Seno Neihna (Plateau), Manghaia Lung (Memorail Stone) and Fiara Tui are the main tourist attraction of Champhai.

Nagaland

The state of the Nagaland is really charming and lovingly beautiful with its steep hills, green-carpeted valleys and exotic tribes. Dzukou Valley

Dzukou Valley is one of the best places for nature lovers and also trekking spots of North East India. Visit this valley between June and September, because in this time, it is covered with carpet of wild flowers. It is encircled by hills, natural caves & rocks, so it becomes ideal for camping. It is the home for the endangered species of Indian Elephant, Leopard, Asiatic Black Bear and Tragopan.

Tripura

Tripura is the second smallest state of India, which share borders with Bangladesh. As a result of its ethnic cultural diversity, its bountiful natural purlieus, its temples, museums and palaces, Tripura tour becomes a mesmerizing for people. Music, fine arts, dance and handicrafts are the main culture of Tripura and the flora and fauna, the ancient palaces, Buddhist pilgrimage centers and the natural scenarios makes its wonderful tourist spot. The capital city of Tripura is set with many places, temples and palaces including the College Tilla, Ujjayanta Palac, Kunjaban Palace, Jagannath Temple, Venuban Vihar, Buddha Mandir, Ravindra Kanan, State Museum, Tribal Museum, Sukanta Academy, Laxminarayan Temple, Uma Maheswar Temple, Benuban Bihar, Gedu Mian Mosque, Malanch Niwas, Rabindra Kanan, Purbasha, Handicrafts Designing Centre, Fourteen Goddess Temple, Portuguese Church and Puratan Agartala. Gol Bazaar and Kaman Chowmuhani are the commercial point of the city. The plenty of tourists are attracted by beautiful palaces, temples, lakes, gardens and hills to enjoy its natural beauty with its historical edifices.

Unakoti:

The meaning of Unakoti is “One less than a crore”. It is a Shiva pilgrimage site, known as the ‘Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava’ dating back to the 8th or 9th century. The statue of Shiva is about 30 feet high including an embroidered headdress that itself is 10 feet high. Around the statue of central Shiva, you can also see other rock-cut and stone images of Vishnu, Nandi, Narasimha, Ravana, Hanuman, and several unidentified deitie. Every year a very big fair, “Ashokastami Mela” is celebrated in Unakoti in the month of April.

Sikkim

Sikkim is a land of charming picturesque views and for world’s third highest mountain Kanchenjunga. It is one of the smallest states of India. Due to its reputation of cleanliness, scenic beauty and political stability, it has become one of most visited states of India. Gangtok, Pelling, Yuksam, Gezing, Jorethang, Mangan, Namchi, and Kalimpong are the main city of the Sikkim. Orchid Sanctuary, Yumthang Valley, Pemayangste Monastery, Rumtek Monastery, Pelling, Khecheopari Lake, Yuksom, Namchi, Tashding, and Dudbi Monastery are the important attraction of the Sikkim. The legendary Rumtek Monastery, the Dharma Chakra Centre and the seat of his Holliness Gyalwa Karmapa are also situated in the Sikkim. Tourist can also visit Tsomgo Lake and the Nathula Pass. Snow-capped peaks, dense forests, lush green valleys, gushing rivers, steep gorges and exotic flora makes it one of the attractive travel destinations of the country.

The capital of Sikkim located in the south-east region of Sikkim. This is the perfect place to spend some memorable time in solitude. It is the natural beauty of the hill station that attracts plenty of tourists from distant. Gangtok has many destinations for visit including Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden, Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center, Menmecho Lake, Tsomgo/ Changu Lake, Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies, Mahatma Gandhi Marg (a shopper's delight), Labrang Monastery, Enchey Monastery, Tsulakhang Royal, Kechopari Lake (wishing lake), Deer Park / Rustomji Park, and Phurchachu Reshi Hot Springs. The other side tracks of Gangtock are Changu Lake, Chungthang, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, and Kabi Longstok.

Pelling is one of the most favorite travel places of the Sikkim located between the Pemayyangtse and Sanga-Choling Monasteries. Glorious history, nature and culture of the state make the attraction of the place. People can enjoy number of waterfalls, soft trek routes, villages and soothing atmosphere at this place. The major attractions of the place are Khechopari Lake, Rimbi Waterfalls, Kanchenjunga Waterfalls, Changay Waterfalls, Sigshore Bridge, Dentam Bazaar and the previous capital of Sikkim, Yuksam. It also gives amazing sight of whole peak ranges including the Koktang, Pandim, Zopuno, Kumbhakarna, Rathong, Kabru, Dom, Kanchenjunga, Shimbho, Narsing, Siniyalchu and others. It is best known for snow-capped mountains of Kanchenjunga.

Yuksam:

The first capital of this Himalayan kingdom, Yuksam is a dazzling location for the nature loving tourists where they can feel the fresh air and enjoy cool breeze and the lovely meandering mountain ranges. The scenic hills are wrapped with thick broad-leaved forests of oak, magnolia, rhododendron, birch, maple, chestnut, silver fir, alder, and ash. The main visiting places of the Yuksam are Coronation Throne, Dubdi Monastery, Tendong Hill, Ravangla, Menam Hill, Borong, Versey, Namchi, Temi Tea Garden, Water Garden, The Heritage site, Tashi view point and Tsomgo Lake. Some other attractions of the place are Enchey Monastery, Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology (SRIT), Sikkim Time Corporation Limited (SITCO), Saramsa Garden, Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre, and Water Garden.
