A government-owned corporation, Amtrak provides intercity passenger train service in the United States. On 1 May 1971, Amtrak was organized. Amtrak headquarter is situated at Union Station in Washington, D.C. U.S. federal government is the owner of all Amtrak's preferred stock. The President of the United States appoints the board of directors of Amtrak. In 1971, the United States Senate. Common stock was issued to railroads. However their current holders declined a 2002 buy-out offer by Amtrak, these shares express almost no benefits. Nearly 19,000 people are employed by Amtrak. Passenger service on 21,000 miles (34,000 km) of track are operated by Amtrak. 28.7 million passengers were served by Amtrak in fiscal year 2008. The United States still has one of the lowest inter-city rail usages in the developed world despite this recent growth.
Online Amtrak Schedule Project:
Matthew Mitchell started the project in 1994 to develop Amtrak Train Schedule. The newsgroup misc.transport.rail.americas, and other network users grew the project into a volunteer effort to maintain the schedules as a collaborative project. Brad Fuller decided to no longer coordinate the many volunteers continue this project in the summer of 2006. At Ribbon Rail Productions, members of Amtrak decided to take up the project on their own. Amtrak California train and bus schedules were coordinated by Steve Miller of the California Department of Transportation. Advance copies of the schedules were provided by Joe Wenclawiak and Linda Collins of Amtrak. The Amtrak Stations list was updated and maintained by Bill Ensinger. The Amtrak California's Thruway Bus Service section was updated by Brad Fuller. Comments and suggestions on the schedule listings should be forwarded to ddawdy@ribbonrail.com .
