Are you planning to buy a four wheeler in near future? In that case there is a big surprise for you!!! Bajaj Auto; world’s one of the largest manufacturers of three-wheelers has launched a four-wheeler, the RE 60. This car is expected to compete with the superiority of Nano in terms of size and cost. Nano was the first small and cheapest car in Indian car markets manufactured by Tata Motors. Targeting the middle class consumers; this small car was unveiled on January 03, 2012 at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Actually, the concept of this small passenger car was unveiled by the Bajaj Auto in association with the Renault-Nissan in January, 2008. However, this ultra small, low cost car project got almost cancelled. It was due to the differences between the two partner companies regarding the design and price of the car. Renault-Nissan wanted the car to be priced around $2,500 whereas Bajaj insisted on an overall low cost. Renault-Nissan signed a contract of understanding with the Bajaj Auto in 2010 to take this ultra low cost car project forward. According to the memorandum, the manufacturing, engineering, design, and supply base expertise would be executed by Bajaj, while branding, marketing and selling will be handled by Renault-Nissan. Later Bajaj was chosen as a brand name for the car.

Tata Nano, the biggest competitor of the RE60 is a 4 seated car with well furnished interiors. The seats are adjustable and can be bent in front and back. It gives a mileage of 25 kmpl. It has a 624 cc, 2 cylinders, MPFI Engine with a power of 37 bhp. With a 180 mm diameter Front and Rear drum brakes it provides a turning circle of 4 m. The car weighs about 635 kg and offers a mileage of about 25 kmpl. It has a top speed of 105 kmph. Till now Nano was the cheapest car worldwide.

Coming back to the RE60, it is also a 4 seated car with features like central speedometer cluster, prominent seatbelts in cabin, folding front windows and a boot space of 44-litre. The new water-cooled, 200cc DTSi 4 engine will give it an acceleration of about 70 kmph. It may provide an expected power of 20 bhp. It has two brakes - disc brakes in front and drum brakes in rear. It has a turning circle of 3.5 m. It weighs about 400 kg and has a fuel efficiency of 35 kmpl. The RE60 emits CO2 about 60gm/km, which is the lowest for any small car worldwide. However its price is not revealed yet.

Actually, the company is targeting the market of five million 3 wheelers. Since this company is the biggest manufacturer of 3 wheelers in India it is trying to make its own customers to opt for the RE60, instead of competing with other car companies in the market. If priced right, the features like high fuel efficiency and environment friendliness may add charm to the car. The car is planned to be sold in the global markets. In fact, the RE60 may start its life in Sri Lanka, even before India. Another market for the car is Africa. The company makes about 5, 20,000 three wheelers every year, in which only 2, 00,000 are sold in Indian markets. The car is basically made as a public transport and can also be used for personal use.

Only time can tell if RE60 will get the same response like the Nano, but its commercial aspect suggests that it can get a huge success in Indian markets. The production is expected to begin within the next few months at Aurangabad. However there is no news about the price, but in order to make an impression in Indian car market, the company will have to keep the price of the RE60 lower than the Nano.
