A Hindu festival, Basant Panchami or Vasant Panchami will be celebrated on Wednesday, 20th January 2010. Basant panchmi is also known as Shree Panchchami. On this Hindu festival, people worship to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and art. On the fifth day of the Indian month Magh (January-February) the first day of spring, Basant Panchami is celebrated every year. Millions of followers took their holy immerse in the River Ganga in Allahabad. An important part of “Basant Panchami” is the fourth bathing festival of Magh Mela. It is believed that Goddess Saraswati was born on this day.

In Kolkata Bengal, the government has declared a state holiday on Basant Panchami (Saraswati Puja). In schools, colleges, institutions of music, arts and science, as well as at homes, Saraswati Puja will celebrate with great respect. It is believed that Goddess Saraswati provides human beings with the powers of speech, wisdom and learning. On this day, the people will wear clothes of yellow color because the color yellow plays an important role in this festival. With mustard, sunflower and other yellow blooms, an idol of Goddess Saraswati is decorated. The families consume Yellow sweets.
