Black or dark circles under or around the eyes are very common beauty complaint among people. Almost 90% people have dark circles under their eyes at one time or another. Dark circles can be an underlying sign of many issues in the body and can make a beautiful face very ugly. The skin under eyes is very thin and so on exposure to sun rays, it gets damaged and becomes more thin and wrinkled. As a result, the veins below this thin skin start looking prominent. So, dark circles are formed due to the wrinkles and prominent veins. Sometimes, pigmentation is also responsible for dark circles under eyes.

Dark circles under eyes make look of people exhausted and tired. Dark circles can be caused by many different factors such as bone structure, pigmentation, and inflammation. Heredity is also one of the major reasons for dark circles. They are also considered as a sign of unhealthiness. Treatments for dark circles under the eyes mostly depend on what's causing and they range from vitamin supplements, to make-up, to topical creams and to laser surgery. Several home remedies are also effective to treat dark circles and puffiness below the eyes.

Causes of black circles under eyes:

Black circles under eyes can be a temporary condition in some people but can be a constant problem for others. Dark circles can be usually caused by numerous factors and some of these factors are described below.

Lack of Sleep and Fatigue:

Not taking enough sleep in the night can cause dark circles in some people. Lack of enough sleep and fatigue can make the skin paler, resulting in more prominent dark circles.

Allergies:

Some allergies like, hay fever can cause eye irritation or itching that compels the affected individual to massage his or her eyes frequently. Constant massaging or scratching the eyes can cause the skin under the eyes to darken. In addition, allergies can also dilate the blood vessels present under the eyes, which can result in darkening of area under the eyes.

Aging:

Dark circles can become more distinctive and obvious on aging. With growing age, the skin around the eyes thins out and makes the blood vessels beneath the skin more noticeable.

Eczema:

In some individuals, skin conditions such as eczema can also cause dark circles. Eczema can cause inflammation and irritation or itching of the eyes that force an individual to rub his or her eyes and eventually leads to dark circles.

Heredity:

Dark circles can also be formed as an inherited trait and so may not be associated with the amount of sleep and any underlying health condition. Some people have a more transparent skin as of heredity and so the veins under the eyes can look darker and more prominent. Shape of the face is another inherited trait. People who have deep set eyes are more likely to get under eye dark circles.

Cold and Sinus Infection:

The appearance of dark circles can also be caused by sinus infection or nasal congestion as it increases the pressure inside the blood vessels. Cold and sinus infections can make the skin paler and the dark circles look more discrete.

Exposure to Sun:

For many individuals, one of the most common causes of dark circles under eyes is excessive exposure. Melanin production is increased in the skin on excessive exposure to sunlight which can cause skin pigmentation and make the skin darker around or under the eyes.

Nutritional Deficiency:

Nutritional deficiency takes place due to not eating healthy and nutritious foods and may be the reason for getting dark circles. Deficiency of some essential nutrients in the body, especially iron, folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin K can worsen the dark circles.

Stress:

Black circles may be appeared in people who live too fast-paced lifestyle, especially by spending long hours on the computer. Possibly, it may take place due to lack of sleep.

Medications:

Medications which cause dilation of blood vessels can cause circles under the eyes to darken. The skin under the eyes is very delicate and so any increase blood flow shows through the skin.

Pregnancy and Menstruation:

The skin can also turn into paler during pregnancy and menstruation, which again permits the underlying veins under the eyes to become more visible.

Other Factors:

Dark circles can also be caused due to factors like, smoking, stress, anemia, over consumption of alcohol and caffeinated beverages, intake of certain medications that dilate the blood vessels, pregnancy and menstruation.

Natural Remedies:

Cold compress:

Close your eyes and cover them with a cold washcloth for about five minutes. Repeat the procedure several times throughout the day. This will help to constrict blood vessels and minimizes darkness. It may help to minimize tissue swelling and remove some of the darkness.

Moisturizer:

Moisturize the skin to minimize the appearance of bags. Use moisturizer that contains vitamin C, an antioxidant that protects skin cells from damage and supports collagen production; licorice (or fennel) extract, anti-inflammatory; and stabilized oxygen, a form of hydrogen peroxide that promotes circulation.

Tea Bag Treatment:

To increase circulation, apply a cold compress of rosemary tea which helps to decrease swelling around the eyes. Prepare tea by bringing a half-cup of fresh rosemary and a quart of water to a boil. Then, steep for 20 minutes and strain it. Soak a washcloth in the tea and ring out extra liquid anal place over eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. Apply this once a day, as required.

Acupressure:

Acupressure is a circulation-boosting treatment. You can do this easy exercise daily. To do this exercise, close your eyes and gently press your ring finger underneath one eye, moving from the inside corner to the outside corner. Do this 10 to 15 times and repeat same procedure on the other eye.

Sunscreen:

To keep away the sun's rays from darkening the skin under your eyes, daily use a sunscreen especially made for the face with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, but preferably 20.

Freeze some parsley in ice cubes.

In place of eye creams, use the parsley cubes to diminish dark circles and puffiness. Parsley is packed with chlorophyll which helps to fade darkness, while the ice cubes decrease the swelling.

Potato/Cucumber combinations are helpful.

Close your eyes and cover eyelids with slices of raw potato or cucumber for 15-20 minutes. Wash with warm water and apply a cream.

Soak cotton in a 1:1 mixture of potato and cucumber juices. Place the cotton on your eyelids and keep for 20 minutes. Wash your eyes with cold water.
