The leading retail chain in lingerie market of UK, Marks and Spenser has launched a carbon neutral bra. This is a good step ahead for going green as the set is manufactured in an 'eco factory' in Thurulie, Sri Lanka where the energy consumption has been declined three times by means of utilizing most of the light from sun and minimum from light bulbs.
The company which made this carbon neutral bra is operated through hydroelectricity generated on a close by river and solar panels on the roof. Furthermore, the company will control some remaining amount of carbon dioxide likely to evolve while creating the bra by planting around 6,000 trees in the surrounding area each year. The head of Sustainable Business at M&S, Mike Barry said that the retailer will seek to create more carbon neutral clothing in future and hoping other firms as well to follow green scheme.
Carbon neutral bra is a part of Autograph Leaves lingerie collection; four styles of bras, 3 knickers as well as a set of suspenders. The Carbon Trust Footprinting Certification Company has analyzed carbon-neutral status of all these sets. The calculation considered footprint left by each product in their life cycle; from manufacture to washing and drying by customers. Additionally, local community will be able to enlarge agriculture yielding fruit and timber.
Mike Barry also said, “The complexity of a bra’s supply chain makes it the ideal product to learn about the practicalities of carbon footprinting, as it contains 21 component parts from 12 different suppliers.” M&S has promised under its lengthened Plan A commitments that each of its 2.7 billion individual items will contain Plan A feature by 2020 together with a target of 50% by 2015.
