In 2009, The Coca-Cola Company introduced a Freestyle fountain soda Machine that delivers 100, 104 or 106 different Coca-Cola drink products as well as custom flavors. The company was invented by Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886. It holds 70 percent of the U.S. fountain machine market.

According to Wall Street Journal: “Coke’s new Freestyle machine is housed in a curved metal shell created by the designers of Ferrari race cars, and features a touch-screen menu. Inside, technology common in measuring tiny doses of chemotherapy drugs is used to release digitally-controlled amounts of concentrate flavor from dozens of plastic cartridges.”

A high-tech touchscreen feature of Coke Freestyle allows users to customize their drink for example, if you want a little cherry flavor in your Sprite, then press on the right pads, or if you want to mix Coke with fruit punch, press on the right pads.

For Freestyle's complicated technology and expense, Coke charges 30 percent more on the modern Freestyles than traditional fountains. This month Freestyle machine will be rolling out in mass with 500 to be shipped out in the U.S.

The vice president in charge of Freestyle, Gene M. Farrell said "If you think about ways to reinvigorate your brands and re-engage consumers, what better place is there?" The company began developing the Freestyle after five years. It is still only tested in a handful of stores and refuses to say costs of the machines or expenses on the project.

Farrell is stating that it cost “hundreds of millions” of dollars to develop. To test of Freestyle and ensure it is profitable for both companies, various clients such as Jack in the Box, El Pollo Loco, Subway and Carl’s Jr. are partnering with Coca-Cola. In beta-testing in restaurants in Atlanta, Freestyle has triggered beverage sales to increase by double-digits”

The average user takes anywhere from 12 to 17 seconds to pick and dispense a drink, in regular soda fountains, but with Coke’s new Freestyle machine users first time take about 22 to 26 seconds, then about 12 to 17 seconds to select and pour a drink and it can pour around 95 drinks per hour (It contains 60 zero-calorie options, and 68 caffeine-free options.)

How it work?

Farrell said. "each Freestyle is outfitted with about 30 cartridges that contain the proprietary flavor formulas for each brand (ex. Coke, Minute Maid, Fanta, Barq’s). The cartridges, which look like giant printer cartridges, are blended with carbonated water and sweetener, either zero-calorie sweetener or high-fructose corn syrup. Once the customer makes his or her selection, Freestyle will blend the three together to create the right drink. Because you control the pour, customers “can create your own drink by mixing certain flavors,”

Freestyle contains many new brands that can't be found in traditional soda fountains such as Dasani flavored waters. Once you push the brand which you like, the screen will display to you more flavor options together to that brand. For example, if you press on Fanta, it has 8 different flavor options. You can continue to press pour button until required quantity.
