Nowadays, many different types of hair colors are available in the Market. New generation is very crazy about change the appearance, so everyday they want to do something extra with thier hair. Adding color in hair is one of the quickest and most dramatic ways of changing the way of your look.  If you are bored with the same hairstyle, hair color and looks, then you can get a sudden change by just coloring your hair. There are five types of hair dyes: Permanent Hair Color, Semi-permanent Hair Color, Temporary Hair color, Highlights, and lowlights.

If you want to change your look by hair color, then keep in mind important information. First choose the right hair color, which should suit on your skin color. Light skinned people should not choose dark hair color because it draws color out of their skin. Dark, tanned skin does not look great when mixed with a one-tone blonde, but four or five blonde chestnut or honey tones look fabulous.

There are five main types of hair color given below:

Permanent Color:  It is mixed with hydrogen peroxide liquid to lift hair color. The peroxide opens the hair cuticle to permit the color to reach the cortex and form the color. There are two basic kinds of permanent dyes: oxidation hair dyes and progressive hair dyes. It gives 100% complete coverage. This hair color may weaken with the use of harsh detergents or with exposure to the sun, but that hair will never return to its original condition or original hair color. Permanent hair colors will remain for four to six weeks. Mostly this color treatment is used by old age people which are facing white hair problem.

Permanent hair color level

  • Level 1 - true black, blue-black, violet-black, espresso-black
  • Level 2 - deep brown, aubergine
  • Level 3 - dark brown, dark red-brown, dark auburn
  • Level 4 - medium brown, medium auburn
  • Level 5 - light brown, light auburn, true red
  • Level 6 - dark blonde, dark strawberry-blonde, light auburn
  • Level 7 - medium blonde, medium gold, medium strawberry-blonde
  • Level 8 - light blonde, light gold, light strawberry-blonde
  • Level 9 - pale blonde, pale gold, pale strawberry-blonde (pink-blonde)
  • Level 10 - platinum blonde, platinum-gold

Semi-Permanent Color:  It has the ability to stay in the hair for about six shampoos. It is direct dyes that is not mixed with a processing solution and is used to stain the hair. Some time semi permanent colors become a permanent if your hair is damaged or porous.  It’s like  permanent hair color, used only darken the natural color.

Demi-Permanent Color:  Demi-Permanent color is midway option between semi-permanent and permanent color.  It is made with small amount of peroxide without ammonia. The color is gradually washed out, it lasts from 12 to 24 shampoos.  Demi-permanent colors can improve and brighten natural color and blend or cover up grays. Demi permanent color is not for dark hair color.

Temporary color:  Temporary colors are available in most drugstores in a variety of colors and products.  Color lasts from one shampoo to the next and is deposited on the outside of the hair shaft. Temporary hair colors are applied in the form of rinses, gels, mousses and sprays. You can also use hair mascara for more dramatic effects as well as spray-on hair color and color-enhancing shampoos to brighten and eliminate unwanted tones.  Recently, temporary color is in trend because it is removed from hair in very short time, so people can apply new color quickly.

Semi-Temporary Color:  Semi-Temporary color lasts from 4-6 shampoos. The usually incur no damage to the hair. You can expect about 40-60% gray coverage.

Levels of Hair Color:

There are 10 levels of hair color used by manufacturers. The darkest black is level 1, while the lightest blond is level 10.

  1. Black
  2. Very Dark Brown
  3. Dark Brown
  4. Brown
  5. Medium Brown
  6. Light Brown
  7. Dark Blonde
  8. Light Blonde
  9. Very Light Blonde
  10. Light Platium Blonde

Tips before Coloring

Before coloring, check allergic test, if your scalp is soft and sensitive or your hair damaged or dry. Wash your hair by shampoo to remove the pollutants of your hair. Do not conditioning and do not use a shampoo/conditioner mixtures available in single bottle.

Tips while coloring

Follow the Mixing instruction which is given with product, use protective gloves and an old towel, especially when you use hair color for the first time. To keep the dye off your skin, you could put creamy gel like Vaseline around your hairline and it is better to do not get it in your hair though, or it will unnecessarily bother your hair coloring process.

Tips after coloring

After coloring Rinse your hair in lemon based solution immediately to make your coloring to last longer. This also increases the strength of the hair color.  Another tip is use spoons of hair color to your regular conditioner after each shampoo.  Leave it on three to five minutes and rinse it with warm water. Bleaching your hair roots is necessary after shampooing.
