The latest debate topic in India: Is it right to lower down the age of consensual sex consent in India from 18 to 16? There are lots of different points of view on this topic, some wants to make it 16 whereas some wants to fix it at 18 in the Sexual Offences Bill. On March 18, 2013, under the pressure of opposition, the Union Cabinet has passed the diluted version of anti-rape bill which includes that the age for consent of consensual sex is 18, graded punishment for stalking, voyeurism and the disrobing to cover private and public situations. CPI wants to maintain the age of consent as 16 but BJP, SP and some other political parties appeal to have age of consent as 18. About the age of consent as 16, Rekha Abel - president of Shaheen Women Resource and Welfare Association told that the draft does not change the age of marriage, it only creates more confusion in the definition of child.
After the Union Cabinet has approved the amendment, it will be introduced in parliament and pass out as early as possible. If the age of consent is reduced to 16 then it might again create many problems in Indian society. In India, pre-marital sex is considered as taboo from the ancient time. It will largely affect on the historic culture of India and may transfer the Indian tradition into the Western Cultureless System. In India, approximately 1 out of 5 women are married before the age of 15 and if the age of consent will be reduced to 16 then there are more chances to increase the rate of child marriage in India.
At the age of 16, girls and boys both are studying in the class of 11, so obviously this is not the right time for them to think about sex with same age group. They have to concentrate on their studies for better future. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev said that sex at 16 is not right for a person either physically or psychologically and if this bill will pass out with consent age of 16 then it will break the Hindu society and its culture quality. To give the approval to consent age of 16, will bring in the live-in relationship culture like Western countries and it may create more cases of single unwed mother pregnancies, rate of extra-marital affairs, etc.
Rather than lowering the age for consent, government should promote the sex education and counseling into the schools and colleges. Today’s generation is more advanced and intelligent than 80s and 90s, therefore parents lack behind to give proper advice to their children about implications of early sex and consequences. Government should promote the sex education by means of various campaigns for betterment of society. If bill passes out with consent age of 16, then Juvenile crime age limit should also reduce from 18 to 14, as youngsters of age 15-18 are more prone to this act.
As per the amendments of Constitution of India, the legal age to acquire the driving license, to vote your favorite politician, and the legal age for marriage is - “18 years”. Moreover, all contracts and bonds for business purpose has legal age limit of 18. Then why government think about to give the legal permission to teenagers to have sex at the age of 16 at their own will? By allowing the consent age of 16, government will lead the country and country’s teenagers towards the unsolved problems to face in future. In short, “Consensual Sex” at the age of 16 or 17 is not the best thing to do.
