PGA Championship 2010 started on Thursday 12 August and ended on Sunday, 15 August 2010. It was the 92nd PGA Championship played at the Straits Course of the Whistling Straits complex in Haven, Wisconsin. It was the second time PGA Championship held at Whistling Straits, last time the 86th PGA Championship was played at Whistling Straits in 2004, in which the Vijay Singh won the Championship. 2010 PGA Championship was won by the Martin Kaymer in a three-hole playoff over Bubba Watson.
In the 2010 PGA Championship, Dustin Johnson needed a par or better on the 18th hole to won but he ended the hole with a bogey. A rules official told him he would be penalized 2 strokes for grounding his club in the “bunker”.
The rules of golf state that “you cannot ground your club in a bunker and Johnson did indeed ground his club, but as he pointed out, he was totally unaware saying, I just thought I was on a piece of dirt that the crowd had trampled down. I never thought I was in a sand trap. It never once crossed my mind that I was in a bunker,” according to T.J. Auclair on pga.com.
Johnson held a one-shot lead entering the final hole in the final round of the 2010 PGA Championship. He appeared to have bogeyed the hole, which would have tied him for first and entered him into a three-hole playoff with Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer. After finishing the final round, he received a two-stroke penalty and prior to signing his card for grounding his club in an apparent bunker, thereby dropping him to a tie for fifth place. The bunker looked more like a patch of sand and was full of people on both sides adding to the difficulty in identifying it as such.
