The energy performance rating system has been developed and it gives the energy performance rating according to the energy efficiency of specific buildings and industrial plants. This rating system is used to know the particular item is liable to earn Energy Star recognition. Now Energy Star label is showing on major appliances, lighting, home electronics, office equipment, and more. EPA has extended the label to cover new homes and commercial and industrial buildings. In 2009, There are about $19 billion energy and cost savings of businesses, organizations, and consumers delivered by Energy Star across the country, saving.

Energy performance ratings released for Commercial and institutional buildings rating like Hospitals (acute care and children’s), Hotels and Motels, Bank/Financial Institutions, K-12 Schools, Medical Offices, Warehouses (refrigerated and non-refrigerated), Residence Halls or Dormitories, Offices, Retail Stores, Courthouses, and Supermarkets. Energy performance ratings for industrial facilities like Automobile assembly plants, Cement Plants, and Corn Refineries (Wet Corn Mills) industrial facilities.

The following home improvements products are eligible for Energy Star Tax Credit: There are three types of products qualified for a tax credits for energy efficient home improvements. These products are only provided for own home and use as your principal residence. A temporary absence for special circumstances like education, vacation, business, illness, or military service will not change your principal residence.

  • Tax credit is available at 30% of the cost, up to $1,500 total, in 2009 & 2010. This product includes only existing homes not new contraction homes. Energy Star Tax credit is eligible on windows and doors (including sliding glass doors, garage doors, storm doors and storm windows), insulation, Roofs (Metal and Asphalt), HVAC (Air Conditioners, Air Source Heat Pumps, Furnaces and Boilers), Water Heaters (Gas, Oil, & Propane Water Heaters, Electric Heat Pump Water Heaters), Biomass Stoves.
  • Tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, with no upper limit, through 2016 (for existing homes & new construction. Energy Star Tax credit is eligible on Geothermal Heat, Pumps, Solar Panels, Solar Water Heaters, Small Wind Energy Systems.
  • Tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, up to $500 per 5 kW of power capacity, through 2016 for not vacation home.

How to apply for the tax credit?

When the property is ready and available to use, the IRS defines as "placed in service". It is not when you purchase product, but the day installation is complete, and you are able to use your new product.

  • You require filing the 2009 IRS Form 5695 and submit this form with your 2009 taxes (by April 15, 2010) for products placed in service in 2009.
  • On the 2009, 1040 form, the residential energy tax credit (from Form 5695) is claimed on line 52.
  • For products "placed in service" in 2010, you would take the tax credit on your 2010 income taxes.

The energy efficiency tax credits form required: Save your receipts and the Manufacturer's Certification Statement for your records and submit Form 5695 with your taxes.
