David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith (both of CBS's internet TV series Clark and Michael) creates the fantasy comedy series. On 6th June, the Hard Times of RJ Berger premiered after MTV's Movie Awards. Factually, the show is without premise. RJ has a big penis, and then everyone in school finds out about it. How this creates conflict or puts characters into new contexts or anything is not immediately cleared by the show. It is simply the way to open up your raunchy teen sex comedy movie in which RJ Berger's penis is revealed to his high school's cognoscenti, and then he has sex with lots of hot girls, and he finally realizes that the girl who was his best friend all along was the girl for him as she really understands him.
MTV senior VP Liz Gateley said, Paul Iacono now plays Berger is "this great underdog character, lovable, very relatable, trying to navigate that minefield of being 15," . "The big penis is still the hook," says co-creator Seth Grahame-Smith (author of literary mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), mostly as "the thing that kicks off his confidence and lets him come out of his shell."
In the second episode, the show goes unmentioned and only a brief though pivotal moment of embarrassment in the third is provided by it. Instead, the show turns around RJ's interaction with his randy parents, a pudgy pal, a goth-girl stalker, an unattainable blond classmate and her jock boyfriend.
Katzenberg said, "The stories are not penis-driven," "If everyone saw (it) and he got the hottest girl in school and was popular, we wouldn't have a show."
Scripted comedies has been aired by MTV before, including animated series like Beavis and Butt-Head, but has not a hit in that arena in several years.
"We're definitely known as largely a reality channel, and we want to keep that going," says David Janollari, a former WB programming chief hired early this year to oversee scripted-series development. "But we also think that by offering a diverse plate, we have a better opportunity to keep more of our young audience watching the channel."
