What is data roaming?
When you travel aboard, at that time you use another mobile network to access internet also you are charged by your home network. This makes you to pay more bill. Here, it is advised to do some of the modifications in your mobile’s setting to let you pay less bill amount while you travel aboard.
Turn off Data Roaming:
When you travel aboard and use the services like internet without Wi-Fi and email application, at that time you roam on another network and that mobile company will charge you more than you pay usual charge to your local provider.
By default, your iPhone’s setting set as “off” for the international data roaming option. If international data roaming option is not set to “off” mode in your iPhone while you travel to overseas, then you will be charged for the sending and receiving of email, browsing the web, visual voicemail and downloads. So, do not forget to turn it “off” while heading out.
If you have an iPhone, then change your normal setting and follow the steps: open settings>go to Airplane Mode> turn on Airplane Mode. If you have an Android enable mobile, then follow the steps: select Settings option> choose Wireless & Networks> Mobile Networks > uncheck Data Roaming.
If you have any mobile of Samsung, then turn off the Data Roaming by following these steps: Go into Settings>more setting> Mobile Networks>untick roaming button.
For blackberry users: Manage Connections> Mobile Network Options> change Data Services While Roaming to “off”.
If you are using any of Windows phone, then follow the steps described below: Go into Settings > Mobile Network > Data Roaming Options> select "do not roam".
Disable Push Notifications and Auto-Synching:
When you have set your iPhone or android enable mobile to give you instant alert on getting any new email, it requires some data usage to give you alert. When you go onboard for travelling and your mobile is in roaming, you have to disable your email alert settings otherwise you have to pay more for data usage on providing you alert of emails.
If you have iPhone, then follow the steps given below to switch off the email alerts : Settings> Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data to turn off Push Notifications. Or if you want to disable push notifications manually on your iPhone, then click on the application and set the notification center on “off” mode.
If you have an Android mobile, then firstly go to settings and open the tab of Accounts & Synch and turn off the Auto-Synch option to reduce your overseas data usage.
Be Aware of How Much Data you’ve used:
One of the best way to reduce your unnecessary data usage during you are heading out from your local area is to keep an eye on your data usage. You can reset your data tracker to get exact number that how much data you have used.
To reset your data tracker at zero in iPhone, follow the steps: Settings > General > Usage ("Cellular Usage" on some phones)>reset data statics.
If you have an android enable handset, then you can download any data tracker app from the trusted service providers.
Buy an International Data Package Through Your Mobile Provider:
If you want to make your email alerts while travelling out, then you can buy international data package from your wireless carrier. It may seem costly but it will cost you less than you have to pay for roaming charges. You can use different data package of trusted providers like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.
Buy a local SIM Card or International SIM card:
You can buy prepaid international SIM card, if you have to travel aboard for long period of time. Or you can also buy one local SIM card, but it might get difficult to have one as it may required some documents to prove that you are resident of that state or country. So, you can ask to your service provider to give you world-compatible or international SIM card.
Some of the companies that provide international SIMs are OneSimCard, Maxroam and Telestial.
You can also use some of the Wi-Fi enabled latest services to reduce your roaming bill. You can communicate with the people though you are aboard without using any data. If you have Wi-Fi or Internet access, then you can use “What's App” to send messages, pictures, audio notes and video messages with friends, via Wi-Fi. Vibr is another free app that lets you call and text via Wi-Fi or 4G.
Don't watch TV, films or download music:
Do not watch movies or download any audio content while you travel overseas as it eats up more data than usual. It might make you to pay £100s or £1,000s roaming bill.
Pack your Kindle Keyboard for free web access:
Besides other alternative of Wi-Fi options, if you have Kindle Keyboard with you, then do not forget to pack it. It will allow you to access free internet with the help of Wi-Fi in many countries around the world.
Get special apps to compress the amount of data you use:
If you have to use internet for any purpose, then you can use different special applications to download compressed data from different applications such as facebook, emails etc. It will reduce your data usage.
Use "offline" tourist guides:
If you visit any place, then you have to use travel guide app for being on your way in unknown city. Instead, you can use tourist guides that are offline besides being online. It will reduce your data usage, by providing you access to maps and reviews without thrashing your data payment.
Don't download attachments and manually retrieve emails:
Downloading your email attachments increases the use of data and leads you to pay big bill while roaming out. So, you can save your data usage by signing up to a web-based service like MSN Live Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail Or download your attachments after you get back.
