Chiggers are also called as red bugs and harvest mites. They are reddish arachnids that generally cannot be seen with the naked eye. These parasitic insects feed on animals and humans. The larvae (babies) give forth in grass and plants and affix themselves to anyone who get close enough for them to ascend onto. The larvae join itself to a pore or hair follicle after finding a suitable host and insert digestive enzymes into the hole that punctually dissolve the surrounding skin cells which are then used for sustenance by the budding chigger. After eating their fills, they release from their hosts and grow into adults and feed on plant matter on which they lay more eggs.

A popular misapprehension of chiggers is that they warren under the skin. When chiggers bite, it generally progress into super-itchy, increased red welts that can take up to two weeks to cure. Pants should be preferably tucked inside the socks, and wear shoes which have no airing. To prevent chiggers from infesting humans, this is one of the best ways.

Wash Your Clothes and Yourself:

Take off your clothes immediately after returning from areas that have chiggers. These clothes should be washed in hot water. Then go straight away to the bath tub. A thorough bath should be taken to get rid of the insects on the skin. Scrub with soap for at least fifteen minutes. A shower may be taken if a bath is not possible. Do not add bleach or any other chemicals to the water because this will only damage your skin. A bath in hot water will drown the bugs and scrubbing with soap will make sure that larvae are removed from your body.

Wear Repellents:

It is always suggested to wear repellents while moving around in a chigger infested area. Products like sulfur powder and DEETs (N, N-Diethyl-m-toluamide) are very effective repellents but should be applied on your clothes and shoes only not directly on the human skin. Citronella oil is a natural repellent which can be applied on the body. Body deodorants with a strong smell are also said to be effective in warding off chiggers.

Destroying their Shelter and Breeding Grounds:

In shady and moist areas, chiggers are present as they find protection there. The area must be kept dry, well drained, and open to prevent their growth. Yards should be well neatened, and the grass should be cut low. To kill adults’ chiggers and their larvae, wash waste and extra foliage with a mixture of soap and water. Repeat this procedure once a week, for at least a month to ward off newly hatched larvae, if any. Soak indoor plants or houseplants in any insecticidal soap which is labeled safe for plants if they are infected with chiggers.

Use a Hair Dryer:

You can use a hair dryer to eliminate chiggers if you have a particularly bothersome case. Point the hair dryer directly on the affected area, and blow with the high heat as you can tolerate without burning yourself. You will get rid of chiggers if you keep this for at least two minutes. Only for smaller areas of the body, this is a very effective method.

Natural Remedies for Chigger Bites:

There are several natural remedies to get rid of chiggers, and their itchy bites. Try applying a paste of baking soda and water after getting out of the hot bath or shower. This will help to get rid of any chiggers and also it is remedy for the itchiness.

Plain old aspirin is another home remedy for chigger bites. Dampen a tablet with warm water, and gently rub it on the affected area. Vitamin E capsules are also a powerful remedy for chigger bites when taken internally. Relief should be experienced within 15-30 minutes, if you take 400 IU of vitamin E. Until the bites are gone, continue to take 200 IU every few hours so you will experience no itching at all. Other things that can be applied topically on itching skin are:

  • Green tea extracts
  • Nail polish
  • Hydrocortisone skin cream

Spray insecticide in the yard or garden to get rid of chiggers, but be warned.
