IITM (Indian Institute of Technology Madras) is one of the most reputed institutes of national importance in technological education and research. IITM is the Chennai based IIT which is member of elite technology institutes of India established by the MHRD; Government of India. It was a result of partnership between India and Germany. Germany government offered technical assistance to establish an institute of higher education for engineering in India in 1956. But after three years, in 1959, the government of Germany and India signed this agreement in Bonn, West Germany. In 1959, IITM was started by Prof. Humayun Kabir for Scientific Research Union Minister and Cultural Affairs.

Presently, IIT Madras has approximately 460 faculties, 4500 student and 1250 administrative and supporting staff. It has 15 academic departments and advanced research centers in different disciplines on engineering and pure sciences with approximately 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. It has also 100 laboratories and high qualified faculties, who are well-known for their works in the international arena. IIT has 7 Institutes of Technology which are located at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (estb. 1958), Chennai (estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi (estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb. 1847, joined IITs in 2001).
