India played last time in Manchester it was just a average ground with average pitch which was helping batsmen. This time India is facing challenge of Anderson (Swing 140+ kmph), Broad (Tall +140 kmph), Finn (Tall +145 kmph) & Woakes (swing +138 kmph). They are good bowling unit and Finn's come back will make them stronger. Now, how India can win this test match.
1.) Play Gambhir instead of Dhawan
2.) Play Aron, Binny (If pitch is green otherwise play Jadeja) & Ashwin for Shami, Jadeja & Rohit
3.) Win the toss and bat first
4.) Get 70+ opening partnership which will give some protection to Pujara & Kohli
5.) Bowl Bouncers on England batsmen body not outside off stump.
6.) Hold all the catches.
Cook was dropped when he was at 15. Butler was dropped early in his innings - hope they don't do such silly things again. Butler and Cook added 150 + after those let offs. Bell was let off at 0 - that was hitting middle stump - Ballance was out at 10 not given. These two went on to add 300 more. That's close to 450 additional runs England got by sheer luck. Had these 4 went on India's ways the match would have been completely different. The point is - I don't think India is in such a bad state as its being portrayed here. Indian team have to realize this and play sensible cricket - good fielding and batting will put India back on track
Pushing Rahane to open the batting might be better than Pujara opening. England 's problem is having 2 defensive openers, who despite being effective in the absence of a strong bowling attack, wouldn't work against a quality attack. Even if they add 50-75 runs off the first 20 overs, India would've succeeded in tiring Anderson a bit, especially if Broad doesn't play, in which case, Cook would want Jimmy to bowl 7-8 overs in the opening spell. The rest of the English bowlers don't look threatening, and won't be too much to handle for the likes of Kohli, Pujara and Rohit. If MSD walks in with the score reading 350-400+ and ONE well set batsman, then you'll see him take the entire attack apart, like in the third session of the first test where he got 50 off 64 jobs. Aaron, if used in 5-6 over blasts, could remain fit, and at full pace, he could do some damage. Ashwin, should come in for Dhawan as Jadeja and Ashwin bowl well when they bowl together. They can also add runs with the bat.
Bring in Sanju Samson in place of Dhoni and make him captain for these final two tests. Why is BCCI afraid of trying new strategies. do you people agree with me?
