Itchy ear is the sign of an ear infection. Itchy ears could be due to an allergic reaction of the body towards some allergens such as dust mites, pollen, certain medicines, particular food items, animal hair etc. It is one type of health condition that can cause too much of an irritation. Ears are very sensitive part of our body and so any ear problem should be treated promptly and with proper techniques. If the problem is chronic, it is more likely caused by a chronic dermatitis of the ear canal. Really, no cure for this treatment but it can be made tolerable with the use of steroid drops and creams. Prevention is better than cure, so prevent this disease by using ear plugs, alcohol drops, and non-instrumentation of the ear.

Mast cells are distributed in the body throughout a number of tissues. When motivation of these cells occurs, they excrete a range of chemicals into the surrounding tissue which cause swelling or intense itching. Antigens are usually responsible for aggravating the mast cells. Mast cells are usually triggered by a particular antigen or allergen substance for example, pollen. Also, some external factor can trigger the mast cell, for example, by an ear bud you were squeezing down your ear canal. One of the utmost chemical that triggered by the mast cells is histamine that leads to the itch-scratch cycle.

Causes of itchy ear:

Following are some of the possible causes of Ear itching:

  • Skin conditions
    • Eczema
    • Psoriasis 
    • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Ear wax
  • Ear infection
  • Otitis externa
  • Ear fungal infection
  • Allergic reaction
    • Reaction to chlorine
    • Reaction to antibiotic ear drops
    • Reaction to hair sprays
  • Excessive sweating

Symptoms of itchy ear:

  • Sickness - usually in children
  • Fever
  • Fluid draining from the ear
  • Redness
  • Deafness
  • swelling
  • Ear pain
  • Ear inflammation
  • Earache
  • Ear infection
  • Hearing impairment
  • Dizziness

Treatment of itchy ear:

Treatment for itchy ears will depend upon what has caused this condition in the first place.

Simple home remedies that you can use to treat itchy ears:

  • For instant relief, you can put few drops of oil in ears. Olive oil, mineral oil and vegetable oil, are some of the oils that you can use.
  • Take few garlic cloves and add it to olive oil and crush them properly. Then, boil this mixture and let it cool for sometime. Put the drops of this mixture and get rid of any ear infection that causes itchy ears.
  • Mix equal parts of vinegar and rubbing alcohol in a small bowl. Then, simply put the drops of this mixture into the affected ear and get instant relief from itchy ears.
  • If you are suffering from itchy ear due to constant exposure to water, place a heating pad over the ears to avoid fungal infections.
  • Mix the water and vinegar together and drop it in to itchy ear. This mixture will help to bring the pH level in your ears back to normal so that you will no longer experience the annoying itch.

Other treatments:

  • If Itchy ears caused due to allergies, then it can be treated by taking an over-the-counter antihistamine.
  • Keep your ears dry and use some anti-fungal medication if any fungal infection develops in ear due to constant exposure to water.
  • Itchy ears caused due to skin conditions like eczema, seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis should be treated with help of an Ear and Throat specialist.
  • If an irritant like an insect has entered the ear canal, then try to remove it carefully by putting some warm water in your ear. Also, consult physician if this does not work.

Though ears are very sensitive part of our body, it should be treated very kindly. One of the major problems of itchy ear is scratching. Never insert sharp or pointed objects into ear to scratch them because you can cause temporary or permanent hearing damage. Consult a health professional or physician if symptoms of itchy ears persist even after using these home remedies.
