All eyes were on the man heading the Khoo Teck Puat hospital in Yishun when its doors would open because it has been more than a decade since a new public hospital has opened in Singapore.

It was opened with 11 Specialists Outpatient Clinics and day surgery services seeing their first patients. Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) is going to be a progressive hospital with state-of-the-art features that delivers patient-centric services and prompt.

Including chiefs of industry from a range of divisions such as hospitality, technology and finance, the panel has been guiding the strategic direction of Alexandra Hospital and KTPH.
Mr Khaw said "We made some effort to scout around... and we looked for talent from different sectors. The idea is to stretch their imagination. We would like to get them to... think out of the box... "

Alexandra Health Private Limited (AHPL) is led by President and Chief Corporate Officer (CCO) of CapitaLand Limited Jennie Chua that has three-year tenure. Ms Jennie Chua welcomes the multiplicity: "The Board comprises many private sector people from different disciplines, backgrounds and experience. So there’s a lot of value the board can bring to the management."

On the first day in operation there was only for approx 200 people by whom appointments have been made. There was Madam Ong You Lan, the first patient available at the opening of hospital at 8.30 a.m.

She came for a cataract surgery with prior appointment by the doctor who was treating her at Alexandra Hospital. Her surgery was run for 30 minutes. Ong You Lan, patient, said: "I can go home after the surgery. It's more comfortable resting at home." About 60 surgeries a day can be taken in the six day surgical wards. Four of the surgical wards are in operation now, however as the inpatient wards are not ready yet.

Pang Weng Sun, chairman, Medical Board, Khoo Teck Puat & Alexandra Hospital, said: “More complex may involve some other surgical surgeries which may need the backup and support should there be complications. Those will wait till later. The average waiting time for patients is about 15 minutes according to the hospital and a free shuttle service to the hospital from Yishun Interchange. Meanwhile, work on the rest of the hospital persists."

With more than 2 decades of experience of hospital, man’s vision is: "Even as you walk into the hospital, the clerk at the counter would have been alerted - by a camera or a chip, or any other technology we find suitable - and would know who you are and what you were treated for the first time." If this achieved, could fine be a template for other hospitals.
