Labor day is celebrated in United States on the first Monday of September (September 6 in 2010) as a federal holiday.
On 5th of September in 1882, the first Labor Day in New York City in the United States was celebrated. In 1894, it became a federal holiday. The day would be filled with a street parade to allow the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations, it was originally intended. To amuse local workers and Labor originations, a festival was held after the parade. Speeches were held by well-known men and women in later years. In election years sometimes it is seen, but now a days it is less common. Every year, labor day is celebrated on the first Monday in September to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
Initially, Labor Day was organized to celebrate various labor associations' strengths of and contributions to the United States economy. In modern times, mostly it is celebrated as a day of rest. And many people mark Labor Day as the end of the summer season and a last chance to make trips or hold outdoor events.
