Martina Navratilova suffers Breast Cancer

The 53 year old American tennis player Martina Navratilova said that she is battling fatal breast cancer yesterday in the show Good Morning America. She will start six weeks of radiation therapy on May. She also said that she is physically fine and expects to make a full recovery. She was cried when a mammogram revealed a cancer in her left breast in February. She regrets that she is not going for mammograms for four years.

Navratilova has a breast cancer, that is called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) which was confined to the milk ducts and had not spread to the breast tissue. Navratilova said she fell behind on regular breast exams and advised other women to get checked every year. She also advised the other women to be careful about this type of issues. She said, “It knocked me off my ass, really. I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it’s completely out of my hands.” The San Francisco surgeon says that more than 70,000 women are facing DCIS cancer in a year and only one percent chance of anyone woman suffering the breast cancer to die.

According to Cancer Research UK, if someone is diagnosed with DCIS and treated they will almost certainly be cured of the disease. The doctor said that it is important that all women are breast aware and go to their doctor if they notice any unusual changes to their breasts. Navratilova's friend, Dr. Mindy Nagle, said, “It was the best-case scenario you could imagine for detecting breast cancer.'' Navratilova is lucky that her cancer is still detected early and now she plans to start her treatment in Paris in next month.

Martina is a greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player. She has won the Wimbledon trophy for nine times and proved her excellence in tennis. She was recorded the longest winning streak and in the open era and three of six longest winning streaks in the women's open era. She became a member of the famous Laureus World Sports Academy. She is still playing regularly tennis and ice hockey and also participates in triathlons.
