Natural Cough Remedies for Children

Cough problem is very common in children during cold season. Acute viral infection of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat is responsible for common cold in children which often involves the sinuses. Cough generates on responding to the some irritating condition for example inflammation or the presence of mucus in the respiratory tract. It can also take place as an infection or allergy to heavy dust or industrial or tobacco smoke. Usually, cough affects food intake, sleep, and energy levels of children. Many natural remedies are available which relieves the symptoms of cough.

To relieve cough, rest is the best medicine rather than any other remedies. It can be a challenging condition for parents to get kids comfortable enough. A child also tends to become irritable to some extent and all symptoms are visibly very mentally disturbing to parents. Cough medications should not be given to children under the age of two as per the FDA. With over the counter cough remedies, accidental overdose is common and parents aren't forever conscious of the dangers of giving children too much medicine.

According to a child's weight, cough syrup dosages are calculated and because of weight estimation errors, many times parents give more of the drug than the child would actually require. Too much cough medication can cause serious reactions including heart problems, seizures, and hallucinations, children's cough home remedies make sense. Though natural remedies take times to cure, they cure your baby naturally.

Natural Cough Remedies for Children:

Here are some natural cough remedies for children. For better results, try one or several from the following.

  • Hot Steamy Shower:

Start a hot steamy shower with the shower curtain pulled. Mix some drops of eucalyptus oil to the bathtub. In the bathroom, sit with your child and read a story together. To help a cough and thin out secretions, the hot, steamy air helps so your child can cough them up. (Don't allow your child go near the hot shower).

  • Pineapple Juice:

Pineapple juice contains the enzyme, bromelain which is effective in dissolving mucous. If the cough is caused from a build up of secretions in the throat, provide your child sips of pineapple juice as it will help to loosen the mucous, so stopping the cough.

  • Water:

Water is the best expectorant. Allow your child to sip as much water as he is comfortable with, drinking throughout the day. The water will thin out any secretions, ease irritation to the throat, and help to reduce coughing symptoms.

  • Cool-mist humidifier:

Start a cool-mist humidifier in your child's room as this will help those dry, unproductive coughs that disturb the sleep of kids at night by adding moisture to the air.

  • Honey, Ginger, and Lemon Syrup:

Combine 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 2 tablespoons honey in a small bowl. Then, add 1/8 teaspoon of powdered ginger and stir well. Give a teaspoon to your child when he is having a coughing episode.

  • Garlic treatment:

Garlic is used as blood thinner, antioxidant, and cancer preventive. Also, it has wonder effect against common cold. De-skin about 5 to 6 cloves of garlic and made necklace of the 6 cloves of garlic using a normal thread and needle. Place the same around your child’s neck when he/she is sleeping. It will do the rest due to its pungency.

  • Fruit Juice Ice Pops:

Purchase or make your child fruit juice ice pops. The cold temperature of the juice will insensitive the back of the throat and momentarily slow down a cough that is caused by throat irritation.

  • Herbal Teas:

Herbal teas will help to soothe irritated throats and loosen congestion. Thus, it helps to calm a stubborn cough. You can also give peppermint, ginger, or chamomile tea to your older children. (Ensure the tea is not too hot)

  • Warm Chicken Soup:

Warm chicken soup really soothes a cough and congestion. It inhibits the movement of neutrophils, a common white blood cell. This decreases inflammation in the upper respiratory tract, which in turn helps to improve cold and cough symptoms. Different varieties of soups were tested, and most had anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Stay away from the following food items:

It is best you avoid the following mentioned items if your child is frequently down due to common cold and cough. Banana, milk, tomatoes, black eyed beans, peanuts, and any items made from chic pea flour. Instead of milk, you can give soy milk. "No Water for 20 minutes after consuming any fruit".

Cough remedies for children:

Cough remedy: 1

  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice (1/2 a lemon)

Mix this lemon juice with a little bit of drinking water. Drink immediately.
Take this mixture as many times as you want.

Cough remedy: 2

  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (freshly squeezed)

Mix above two ingredients in little bit of drinking water and sips it immediately.
Consume this mixture 2-3 times a day.
