A Singaporean real estate billionaire, Ng Teng Fong was born in 1928 and died in 2010 at the age of 82 on Tuesday after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage on Jan. 23. Read below information of Ng Teng Fong and see his photos here.
Singapore's richest man and property tycoon Ng Teng Fong had a reputation for leading a prudent and unostentatious lifestyle. He was the head and patriarch of the unlisted Far East Organization, one of the three biggest developers in Singapore and also the founder of Hong Kong developer Sino Land. Although he controls at least a quarter of Singapore's housing market, he also owns The Fullerton Singapore in Singapore and several other landmark hotels and other properties.
With the help of one of Singapore's early billionaires, Eliya Thamby, Ng made his fortune. In 2009, Ng's family net worth was US$5.5 billion. Last year in September, Forbes magazine said that Ng was Singapore's richest man.
Far East Organization was recognized as an umbrella for his stable of companies. The group today comprises about 180 privately held developments and investment companies including two publicly listed companies.
Ng Teng Fong family details
Mr Ng was born in Putien in China’s Fujian province, which was the birthplace of many emigrants who later became highly successful businesspeople in Southeast Asia. After a smallpox outbreak in his village of Putian when Mr. Ng was six years old, he came to Singapore. He was known for living simple lifestyle and at the time of his death he lived in his Watten Estate home for 30 years. He leaves behind his wife and eight children. The family of Ng owns the development corporation Far East Organization and Sino Group.
Philip, his younger son runs the Singapore business while Robert, the older son is in charge of the Hong Kong one. After Ng death, his family expressed its gratitude to friends and business associates for their condolences and concern.
In book entitled "Leaders of Singapore," a profile of Mr. Ng written by Melanie Chew, said his first business in the city-state, a provision shop, failed. But he embarked on to have great success - and got the nickname "Lucky Ng" - from going into property development. In 1962, he established his first Singapore housing project and later developed many properties along and near Orchard Rd., including one named Lucky Plaza.
Sino Group was one of Hong Kong's leading real estate developers, and Far East Organization remained one of the biggest landholders in Singapore at the time of Ng Teng Fong death.
