Nicholas Coke is a miracle child. This baby boy was born with anencephaly on December 18, 2008. It is a genetic disease and he is living in Pueblo, Colorado. In this type of cases a person has no brain; they have just a brain stem. Without brain nobody can see, hear, suck, crawl, or sit up. Baby Nicholas also faced this type of problem.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Anencephaly happens in one birth out of 10,000 births, although the exact number is not identified because many of these pregnancies result in a miscarriage. ANENCEPHALY is a neural tube defect that occurs when the cephalic (head) end of the neural tube fails to close, generally between the 23rd and 26th days of pregnancy, resulting due to lack of a main portion of the brain, skull, and scalp. Child with this disorder are born without a forebrain, the most part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebral hemispheres (include the isocortex, which is responsible for higher-level cognition like thinking). The remaining brain tissue is often uncovered by bone or skin.

The forebrain manages sensory, cognitive, and speed functions, regulates temperature, reproductive functions, eating, sleeping, and display of emotions. They also require the cerebrum, the part of the brain responsible for thinking and coordinate. A baby born with anencephaly is generally deaf, unconscious, blind, and not capable to feel pain. A few babies, like Nicholas are born with an undeveloped brain stem. The brain stem is liable for basic vital life functions like blood pressure, heart beat, and breathing. The reason of anencephaly is unknown, although the mother’s diet may play a role including an inadequate intake of folic acid.

Nicholas Coke’s mother, Sheena Coke says, “He’s a miracle. He’s changed so many lives.” She and her husband have a Christmas miracle in little Nicholas. He may not have a brain, but he has touched many hearts. Sheena says, “He can’t see, he can’t hear, he can’t suck.
