The commercial production of Micra Compact Car was started at the Renault-Nissan manufacturing unit at Oragadam in Chennai by Japanese car manufacturer, Nissan. Across India, Micra models placed on display in the all Nissan showrooms and pre-order bookings of Nissan Micra Small Car started on 25 May 2010. Selling of Nissan Micra Small Car will start in some places in July 2010. With a booking amount of Rs 50,000, all the potential buyers can check out the new hatchback car in any of the nearest showroom and book Micra. INR 4500 Crores have been invested by the two firms in this plant which was inaugurated earlier this year in March. The Chennai plant is situated in an area of 640 acres and it has a production capacity of 400,000 units per year. 1,900 workers got employment by this plant and in the coming 2 years, this figure is expected to touch 3,000. The launch will be supported by comprehensive print, digital, radio and TV campaign shortly. Along with its supplier park in Chennai, the company estimates a total of 6,000 jobs to be created in the region.

The new Nissan Micra is designed to have broad appeal to customers in both emerging and developed markets and built on a new versatile platform, the V-platform. In Japan, Nissan Micra was designed and tested and to meet the differing tastes and needs of customers worldwide, it fine-tuned. With its affable appearance, the compact hatchback is also engineered for easy handling and sprightly performance, while realizing class-leading fuel efficiency. Price of Nissan Micra Car is expected between 4 lakh to 5 lakh.

Nissan Motor India is also deciding to create Oagadam unit as a worldwide export hub & in September 2010, the first consignment from the plant could dispatch in September 2010. In markets like Europe, Middle East and Africa, Micra will be exported.

The start of production of its ‘Made-in-India’ compact car (hatchback) Nissan Micra from its manufacturing plant at Oragadam, near Chennai is being celebrated by Nissan Motor India on 25 may 2010. The ribbon is cut by Toshiyuki Shiga, Chief Operating Officer of Nissan Motor Company to mark the roll out of the first car off assembly line. To commemorate the occasion, Managing Director & CEO of Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Akira Sakurai, and Managing Director & CEO of Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama joined the 1900 employees.
