Pollen allergy is one of the most common type of allergic reaction that occurs because of revelation to pollen. During the spring and summer seasons, tiny particles are released from trees, weeds, flowers and grasses which are known as pollen. These pollen particles ride current of air during certain seasons and responsible for many allergic reactions in human. Although the task of pollen particles is to fertilize parts of other plants but many never reach their targets and they enter human noses and throats for triggering pollen allergy. Pollen from flowering plants is less responsible to cause allergy than pollen from weeds. The pollen from the plants which do not have ostentatious flowers causes maximum produce allergies to human. Ragweed, sagebrush, redroot pigweed, lamb's quarters, Russian thistle (tumbleweed), and English plantain are the example of such plants.
Symptoms of pollen allergy:
Not every person is allergic to pollen, but some people are more sensitive to certain types of pollen than others. In different individuals, the symptoms of pollen allergy also differ but mostly the same. During pollen allergic reaction, histamine secretion occurs which causes the expansion in blood vessels of the nose. So, some fluids are released which causes the swelling of nasal passage and congestion in the nose.
The common symptoms of pollen allergy are:
- Pruritus
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Cough
- Urticaria
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Headaches
- Angioedema
- Bronchospasm
- Syncope
- Rhinitis
The other symptoms that are less common are:
- Conjunctivitis: A condition where the membranes of eyelids swell up which reddens eyes
- Difficulty in concentration
- sleeping problems
Also, it can cause choking of the voice or muscle spasm which leads to tightening of the throat and lungs, just like in asthma.
Home remedies for pollen allergy:
- Avoid going outside, especially early morning and evening and also on dry & windy days when pollen levels are at their peak.
- To wash off pollen and other allergens present in your hair and on your skin, Shower or bathe before bedtime.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salty water at night. Good oral hygiene ensures that all potential allergens in the mouth are washed out.
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to respiratory irritants like dust, insect sprays, tobacco smoke, air pollution, and fresh tar or paint during periods of high pollen levels.
- Steam and sauna baths help ease allergy symptoms. The steam and heat helps the body to release toxins and allergens through sweat.
- During late summer and spring, it is better to air condition your room instead of opening windows.
- If you are going out in a car, show up your car windows and turn on your air conditioner.
- Cayenne pepper may help allergies so consuming it during allergy. Other foods that may help include ginger, garlic and onions.
- Chicken soup often helps allergy sufferers, and so does wasabi horseradish.
- You can even try applying petroleum jelly in the inner side of your nose; this would help in reducing irritation.
- As a preventive measure you can take either one capsule of dried and frozen nettle or a cup of nettle tea daily. If you suffering from hay fever, then you can increase the doses from 1 to 3 for excellent results.
- In a little water, boil a lemon rind and minced grapefruit for ten minutes. Take three spoons of this mixture mixed with honey daily.
- If you have itchy eyes during hay fever, then you can try cold black tea eye pack. Prepare black tea and cool it, then dip a cotton wool in it and place it on your eyes.
- One spoon of local honey taken daily is also helpful in hay fever.
