Pongal is very popular and famous festival of Tamil Nadu, India which is celebrated in the very first month of the English calendar i.e., January. Pongal festival marks the growth and prosperity of the farmers and during this festival, the farmers and their families thank god for all his blessings. It is observed in the Tamil month, Thai Masam and as per English calendar; pongal starts on January 14 every year. Pongal marks the entry of sun into Makaram Rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path.
Pongal is celebrated consecutively for four days with lot of gusto in Tamil Nadu. This festival starts with Bhogi Pongal which is dedicated to Lord Indra. Sun (which also is considered as god) is worshipped on the second day of Pongal. Third day is celebrated as Mattu Pongal and the cattle are worshipped on this day. Fourth day of festival is known as Kannum Pongal and is celebrated with aartis (prayers) to mark the end of the festival of harvest.
On this festival, celebrations occur within the family and wishes are exchanged between family and friends. Everyone exchange Pongal wishes, SMS and greetings as one stand on the threshold of the harvest season with the hope that it carries the harbinger of good luck, good fortune and good cheer. During these days, people wish each other good time and happiness, peace and affluence and a whole lot more in life. They wish each other with words like “Pongalo Pongal”.
