One of the largest French automakers named Renault and Japan Car Company Nissan have collaborated and set up new car factory at Oragadam. Renault Nissan inaugurated its new car factory in Chennai in the presence of state Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Renault Nissan has a worldwide business alliance which also enters in India. Renault Nissan will manufacture 200,000 cars by 2012 and 400000 cars by 2014, said by Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Renault Nissan. Renault Nissan is going to export cars to around in 100 countries like West Asia, Africa and Europe.
The CEO & managing director of Renault Nissan named Akira Sakuari said “The new Micra (Nissan’s latest compact car) will be exported to 35 countries in Europe from September 2010”.
Carlos Ghosn, chief of Renault-Nissan said "The all-new plant in Chennai is an intangible symbol of out growth strategy in India. The plant will play a very important role in our global alliance”.
The plant is situated at Chennai, India and representing an investment of Rs 45 billion rupees ($$990m). In May 2010, the plan will start by employing 1500 workers.
The company will create 6000 jobs in the region. From the month July, the alliance will debut selling the new Micra. For the financial year ending March 2011, the Company has targeted sales of 80000 units. The new Nissan Micra will be the first car to be produced at the plant. Over the next two years, Nissan is also planning to launch nine models. In the year 2010, the company will export components worth $20 million which would be increased by 2012 to $40 million.
Akira Sakurai said “The Chennai unit will have 96 vendors to start with and add more vendors going forward when we introduce new vehicles”. He also added “Out of this, 50% vendors will be from Chennai and nearby places and 30% from Delhi and the remaining 20% from Pune and Bengaluru. The plant would have six dedicated vendors inside the complex, who would supply to this plant and later to others”.
The Vice President, V Plantform, Nissan Vincent Cobee said “The new Micra is far superior than the previous one and was developed under V-platform of Nissan”. He also added “This platform is very flexible and is capable of adopting for different markets and different regulations”.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by the representatives of State Government of Tamil Nadu led by Dr. Kalaignar M Karunanidhi, the Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the presence of Dr. M K Stalin, the Hon. Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Also Mr. Yoshiro Mori, President, the Japan-India Association & previous Prime Minister of Japan and both the Ambassadors of Japan and France to India were present .
In the Vplatform one of the key features was weight reduction which is vital for fuel economy. Company has also decreased the number of parts which used in the cars by 18 per cent. The company has decreased total weight of 40-90kg in a car depending upon the market.
