Improving the game's loading times and tumbling its memory requirements, Jagex upgraded RuneScape's game engine on 16 May 2006 and it was again upgraded to allow the accumulation of future content on 26 June 2007. A beta of their "High Detail" mode for members was released by Jagex on 1 July 2008, which was extended to free players two weeks later.

Mark Gerhard was the new CEO of Jagex in February 2009 and he announced noteworthy changes in the way the company would manage the game.
