Sayeeda Hussain Warsi is a British politician and a lawyer. She was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire in 1971 and is the second of five daughters of Pakistani parents. At the age of 19, Sayeeda Warsi married to her cousin, Naeem, from whom she has one daughter, named Aamna. After17 years of marriage, they divorced in December 2007. She married with Iftikhar Azam on 20 August, 2009.

Career and education

Sayeeda Warsi is Shadow Minister for Community Cohesion and Social Action and is a member of David Cameron’s Shadow Cabinet. For the City of Sheffield, she is the Shadow Member and former Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party.

She completed her education from Birkdale High School, Dewsbury College, and the University of Leeds where she lernt Law (LLB). To complete Legal Practice Course, she attended the York College of Law and trained with both the Crown Prosecution Service and the Home Office Immigration Department.

She worked for John Whitfield, the last Conservative Member of Parliament for Dewsbury - at Whitfield Hallam Goodall Solicitors, after qualifying as a solicitor. Then she went in Dewsbury to set up her own specialist practice. For the Ministry of Law in Pakistan, she has worked overseas on a research project on forced marriages and also in Kashmir as Chairman of the Savayra Foundation, for a women's empowerment charity.

In 1996, she was subsequently instrumental in the launch of Operation Black Vote in West Yorkshire and stood as a candidate in the 2005 General Election. She participated in the successful mission to the Sudan to free UK teacher Gillian Gibbons in 2007. Sayeeda has been named the most influential Asian woman in politics by the BBC.

Interest

She has constantly had a keen interest in racial justice issues. She worked as an executive member of the Kirklees Racial Equalities Council for many years. She is also a member of the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust’s Racial Justice Committee and regularly represents them at national conference. She has been speaker on various issues as forced marriages, prison conditions and business network links at a national level. She regularly shares a platform with leading Parliamentarians from both the House of Commons and House of Lords.

She is the current Chairman of the Conservative Party and serves in David Cameron's first Cabinet. Sayeeda Hussain Warsi is the first Muslim woman to sit in a Cabinet. She told the BBC during her first appearance at the UK Cabinet

“For anybody to serve in government is a privilege,” said is the Conservative Party's chairwoman, after Cameron held his first Cabinet meeting in 10 Downing Street, two days after being appointed premier by Queen Elizabeth II. “But to be born the daughter of an immigrant mill-worker in a mill town in Yorkshire, to have the privilege of serving in Cabinet at such an important time in Britain's history I think is terribly humbling,”.

Like all other ministers, now she will get a salary of 137,294 pounds per annum. She has been politically involved since her early college days when she was elected as the Vice President of the Students Union at Dewsbury College.
