The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the SCRA (Special Class Railway Apprentices) entrance examination in the gap of two years. Lakhs of candidates appear in the exam, but only 42 are selected by the UPSC for the position of Apprentices in Mechanical Department of Indian Railways. Notification for SCRA exam 2014 has already been issued, so interested candidates can apply online for the exam at www.upsconline.nic.in, up to 4 November, 2013. The SCRA exam 2014 is going to take place on 12 January, 2014.
The minimum age limit to apply for SCRA exam is between 17 years to 21 years as of 1st January, 2014, but there is age relaxation of 5 years for SC, ST and J&K residents as well as 3 years for OBC. Candidates must have completed their Higher Secondary education with first or second division or an equivalent examination of a University or Board with Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry.
The applicants (excluding female/SC/ST/PH) are required to pay Rs.100 as fees. The fees amount should be deposited in the form of cash in any SBI Branch or through net banking facility of State Bank of India/ State Bank of Mysore/ State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur/ State Bank of Hyderabad/ State Bank of Patiala/ State Bank of Travancore or through any Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.
Exam Pattern of SCRA 2014 Exam
The exam will be taken in two different parts: written examination of 600 marks and personality test/ personal interview of 200 marks. The written examination contains multiple choice questions in English language. There is negative marking also, so the marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
The written examination consists of three papers such as General ability test (English, Psychological test and General Knowledge questions), physical science (Physics and Chemistry questions) and mathematics each of 200 marks. Candidates will get 2 hours for each paper, which means a total of 6 hours.
After written examination, candidates are shortlisted for personality test. Selected candidates will get a call for Personality test/ personal interview and a judging panel will conduct the test.
After the test, the judging panel will make the final merit list that includes selected candidates. Candidates who are selected will be sent for a 4 year undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering at Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Jamalpur. Once you have successfully completed the undergraduate program, the candidates will be given the job of a mechanical engineer in railways.

Candidates can get registered for exam at upsconline.nic.in. The registration process is in two parts: Part-I Registration and Part-II Registration.
Logon to UPSC official website, www.upsconline.nic.in and hit the “Online application for Various Examinations of UPSC” link.
After that, click on “Part I Registration” link and enter the required details in the Application.
Press “Continue” button and then make the payment.
Now, visit the same webpage and hit “Part II Registration” link.
Enter your Registration-Id & Date of Birth and press “Submit” button.
Upload your Photograph & Signature and submit your application.
Finally, take a print out of the form for further use.
