In recent times, almost everybody is using perfume as it makes them to feel sexy and tempting. But only a few people know that which ingredients are used in their favorite perfume. All the perfume, colognes and body spray makers must list all the chemical ingredients on the label but many of them keep some chemicals secret from the customer by not mentioning them. These secret chemicals are dangerous and can cause birth defects/allergic reactions/hormone disruption.
Manufacturers use over 5,000 ingredients to make colognes, perfume, body sprays but only 1,300 ingredients are tested. Environmental Working Group (EWG) along with Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has released a report which shows that there are hazardous chemicals in fragrances which are dangerous for health. They analyzed 17 branded fragrances (13 from United States and 4 from Canada) and found 38 hidden chemicals in them.
17 branded fragrances are Calvin Klein Eternity (for women), Jennifer Lopez J. Lo Glow, Quiksilver (for men), Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio, Coco Mademoiselle Chanel, Britney Spears Curious, Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce, Bath & Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, Calvin Klein Eternity (for men), American Eagle Seventy Seven, Victoria's Secret Dream Angels Heavenly, Halle by Halle Berry, AXE Bodyspray For Men – Shock, Clinique Happy, Hannah Montana Secret Celebrity and Old Spice After Hours Body Spray.
Highest secret chemicals were found in American Eagle Seventy Seven (24). 2nd highest secret chemicals were found in Chanel Coco (18), then Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio & Britney Spears Curious (17). All the 38 hidden chemicals are not assessed by the IFRA’s safety review panel or any publicly accountable institution. These chemicals vary from food additives (only those which are not assessed for safety in perfume) to chemicals (like synthetic musk fragrances, which may cause hormone disruption by accumulating in the human body) with limited public safety data.
Even the listed chemicals on the products are not safe. Listed chemicals contain sunscreen & ultraviolet-protector chemicals that can cause hormone disruption as well as 24 chemical sensitizers which may lead to allergic reactions (asthma, headaches, vomiting, wheezing and nausea). Highest sensitizing chemicals were found in Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio perfume (19).
In the study, 12 hormone-disrupting chemicals were found. On average, 4 hormone-disrupting chemicals were found in all the 17 fragrances. Quicksilver and Jennifer, Halle by Halle Berry and Lopez J. Lo Glow perfumes have 7 different chemicals that disturb the hormone system. From these 7 chemicals, 6 were found to mimic the hormone estrogen and the remaining 1 was found to be related with thyroid effects. Some of hormone-disrupting chemicals were listed on the products.
A chemical, Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) that can damage sperm in human was found in 12 products and a synthetic fragrance ingredient, Musk Ketone that accumulates in the human fat tissue and breast milk was found in over 8 products. Other ingredients of the products were known to respond with indoor air to form dangerous fragrance chemicals (formaldehyde, ultrafine particles and other toxins).
The researchers report that only 19 ingredients were assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) from 91. 27 out of 91 were assessed by either the International Fragrance Association or the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials. As per the report, the fragrance manufacturers have 3,100 chemical ingredients and customers have no method to know that which ingredients are not listed in their beauty products.
