FaceBookTwitter

Star Wars: Battle for Hoth iPhone is the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad tower-defense game and now available at the iTunes store for download from THQ. The location of the Rebel base has been discovered on the ice planet Hoth by Imperial forces. Forces of Darth Vader get order to commence a ground assault by enabling bombardment of the planet from space with the aim to destroy main power generator of Echo Base. The Rebel’s only hope is that its forces can resist the imperial advance long enough to vacate the fated base.

A fast-paced tower-defense game, “The Battle for Hoth” puts players in command of Echo Base’s defenses. Players can use guile, strategy and reflexes to defend Echo Base from attack. Infantry Units, Gun Towers, Snowspeeders and more are at player’s command. Players have to face an army of Droids, Snowtroopers and the terrifying AT-ATs. The stage is set for a climatic clash of technology, tactics and action.

General Instructions:

The purpose of the game is to defend players' base on Hoth, and build up their defenses. The imperial units arrive at one end of the screen (generally the left) with the aim to exit at the other side (generally the right). Each imperial unit who exits the level, will damage player’s base. Player’s base is more damaged by bigger units than smaller ones. Players must build Rebel units to defend their base. Players pay command points to build each unit. Players will see command point tokens appear, when their forces destroy waves of imperial units. For additional command points, collect the tokens.

Building Units:

Touch the required build icon and drag and drop the selected unit onto the playing area to build. As the game progresses, more units are added to the menu. Key to success is the positioning of your units. The imperial units all contain zones of fine areas that the unit can easily target. The zone of fire depends on the range and type of the unit. By positioning their units, they can shoot at the enemy while taking minimal damage themselves is a key strategy.

Command Points:

A Command Point token is released by destroying an entire wave, to collect the token, simply touch it. By collecting more than one token in a single movement, players can earn bonus command points. If players collect three or four or more tokens, the bonus increases, but be quick, token values diminish over time.

Power Generators:

Power is required to operate by All Rebel units, except Soldiers. It is necessary to build Power Generators within range of your combat units to supply them with power. A fixed amount of power is supplied by Power Generators. More power is required by some units as they are upgraded. Power status is represented by green lights at the bottom of each unit. Bright green means the unit has enough power, dark green means the unit does not have enough power. Without enough power, units will not operate until they are supplied with the required power.

Trenches:

To funnel the Imperial Forces into kill-zones, use trenches. To start a trench, Drag-and-drop the trench icon from the build menu and then touch the screen again to set the end point. A trench will be made between the start and end points, providing that the trench does not pass through high ground or other units, and that they have enough Command Points for each section. Soldiers in trenches get a defensive bonus, but other Rebel units cannot be positioned in trenches. Trenches can be destroyed by AT-ATs, but all other imperial ground units are forced to move around them.

Upgrading:

By upgrading Rebel units, improve them. Select a unit then select the Upgrade Icon to upgrade. Then, the cost of the upgrade will be deducted from their Command Points. Each Rebel unit contains 4 levels of upgrade. Upgrading can increase the range, damage and power needs of a unit depending on the unit. Half the total Command Points, which are spent on the unit, are refunded by selling an upgraded unit. Upgrading is a key tactic to let player units to shoot the Imperial forces before their defenses can be damaged, many units have their range improved by upgrading.

Fortress Mode:

Players will unlock the Fortress Mode version when they complete each level. Players only contain a set amount of Command Points and will get no more throughout the level in this mode. The Command Point tokens are replaced with points tokens in Fortress Mode, -- collecting these adds points to your final score. For Fortress Mode, players will need to use different tactics, shock-and-awe concentration of fire is recommended.

Target Priority:

Players can command the Target Priority of units. Units can also Target Weakest/Strongest first or Flying/Ground-based first by default units Target Closest to Base. This can be done per unit or worldwide. It is especially useful to set units that can target TIE Fighters to priorities them over ground units, as they move fast and your forces have less time to attack them.

Key features of Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth include:

  • 15 action-packed levels of combat for control of the ice planet Hoth.
  • 2 gameplay modes, Classic & Fortress for added replay value.
  • Original music and sounds effects from the movies.
  • Original video footage that brings the story to life.
  • Weapons and units from the Star Wars universe including AT-ST and AT-AT Walkers, Snowspeeders, DF.9 Anti-Infantry Batteries, Ion Cannons, X-Wing Fighters and Laser Cannons.
  • Difficulty settings to enable you to control the level of challenge.
  • Target-control command for all Rebel units.

Hints and Tips:

Here are some hints and tips to help you command your forces on Hoth:

  • Placement of units is key; look to see where the Imperial units are moving, build trenches to funnel them and place combat units to shoot at them where they are less able to shoot at you.
  • Protect your better units by placing cheaper units in front of them to act as a screen to soak up Imperial fire.
  • Concentrating your fire is a good strategy as it can kill the Imperial units before they have a chance to return fire.
  • Touch the next wave icon (bottom-left of screen) to see the next unit types that will attack and build your defences appropriately.
  • Build X-wing units on levels with lots of TIE fighter attacks.
  • Once your units become critically damaged, sell them before they are killed so you can recoup some of the Command Point costs of building them.
  • Ion cannons are great -- especially when upgraded -- so make use of them!
  • Building long chains of trenches is a great way of slowing faster moving units like speeder bikes.AT-ATs are large powerful units; but they do have weaknesses; Build snowspeeder towers and upgrade to level 4 -- they are then able to use their tow-cable against the AT-ATs. In addition, place units in their targeting blind-spots during the battle.

Battle for Hoth iPhone Review:

One of the best sequences in the entire Star Wars film series is the Imperial assault on Hoth. Toward the Rebels' hidden base, frightening walkers relentlessly stomp their way and before the victory over the Death Star can be truly enjoyed, they threaten to corner its leaders. Snowtroopers, giant cannons, and more adding to the skirmish with speeders, it's no wonder Hoth has been the scene of several great videogames. And at present, it has come to the iPhone, reconfigured as a tower defense game. It also faithfully installs that dread of wave after wave of Imperial forces possibly overwhelming the Rebels before they can make their escape.

On the whole, Battle for Hoth plays out like most tower defenders. Players create a gauntlet of defenses to hopefully repel endless waves of opponents. New, more powerful defenses unlock over time, but players can always upgrade existing units to strengthen their powers. The Rebel base falls, if too many enemies get through players line. However, a few cool changes are made by Battle for Hoth. The ability to customize the targeting of player’s defenses is liked. A shovel is another great feature. To give a defensive bonus to the player’s unit, they can dig into the snow but this comes at a cost.
