An Indian politician and senior sports administrator, Suresh Kalmadi is the president of the Indian Olympic Association, Asian Athletics Association, and Athletics Federation of India. Suresh Kalmadi was born on 1 May 1944. He is a member of the Indian National Congress political party. For the last 22 years, Pune's man, Mr. Kalmadi has been in Delhi. He contributed in many committees and played important role. Suresh Kalmadi has been actively involved in the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Dr. Shamrao Kalmadi was a social doctor, dedicated to serve the poor. Mr. Suresh Kalmadi has often said that "like my father I am dedicated to Pune. I am the son of Pune." His father founded the Dr. Kalmadi Shamarao High School and he is the trustee of it. At present, the spirit of service of his father is carried by him into his own public life. He completed his study at St. Vincent's High School, Pune, and then at Fergusson College, Pune. The National Defence Academy, Pune was joined by him in 1964.
Suresh Kalmadi also joined the Air Force Flying College in Jodhpur and Allahabad in 1964. Afterward, he became an Air Force pilot and serve in the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. Kalmadi’s role model is the Great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who greatly inspired him. He got the inspiration from Chhatrapati Shivaji and joined the Air Force. He married with Shrimati Meera Kalmadi and has two daughters and one son. Shrimati Meera Kalmadi is more spirituality inclined and Mr. Kalmadi acknowledges that "she has always been my silent anchor.”
There are senior politicians, business men and women, artists, actors, performers, sports men and women present in Kalmadi’s friend circle. Kalmadi became the president of the Indian Youth Congress, Pune in 1977. From 1978-1980, he was the president of the Indian Youth Congress, Maharashtra. For three terms from 1982 to 1995, and again in 1998, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha. He was also chosen to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996 and the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004. At present, he is the sitting MP from Pune. From 1995 to 1996, he served as the Minister of State for Railways during the tenure of P. V. Narasimha Rao as the Prime Minister of India. President of the Indian Olympic Association, Suresh Kalmadi is the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of forthcoming Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Delhi from 3 to 14 October 2010.
Kalmadi was elected president of the Indian Olympics Association for the fourth time on 11 October 2008, in Pune. Kalmadi reportedly walked out during the felicitation ceremony that had been arranged to honor the three Indian medalists at the 2008 Summer Olympics because he was not offered a chair next to the Vice-President of India Hamid Ansari. Kalmadi is accused as being a 'sports mafia' by former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh in January 2010. An extensive network of contacts has also been developed by Kalmadi in Delhi and internationally, which he never hesitates to call on for the profit of Pune.
In India, fears of safety issues surrounding the Commonwealth Games are increasing as crash after crash are being reported. The conduct of 2010 Commonwealth Games has come under public scanner and legal scrutiny, and an apex anti-corruption body of India. Chief Vigilance Commission asks CBI to probe certain aspects of the games' organization. BJP demanded the resignation of Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee and asked the government to take over the organization of the sporting event. But, Kalmadi continues to contradict corruption charges.
