TIFF List 2010: Tracking Toronto Lineup of Documentary Films Announced

TIFF stands for Toronto International Film Festival, is going to organize its 35th edition slate this year. In 2010, TIFF is going to start on 9th September to 19th September. At present, across a variety of programs, 77 titles have officially been set and the number programs should increase to close to 300 by the time the festival commences.

Toronto International Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. TIFF was founded in the year 1976 as the “Festival of Festivals". In this festival, best films are collected among the others films around the world and it shows to audiences of Toronto. The Toronto International Film Festival has become the springboard for the finest of international, Hollywood and Canadian cinema. After Cannes, TIFF is familiar as the most important film festival.

The festival presents seven other awards for People's Choice Best Documentary, People's Choice Best Midnight Madness film, Best Canadian Feature, Best Canadian First Feature, Best Canadian Short Film, FIPRESCI's Special Presentation Winner and FIPRESCI's Discovery Section Winner. People's Choice Best Documentary and People's Choice Best Midnight Madness film were introduced in the 2009 edition of the festival.

Total of 50 Gala/Special Presentation films have been announced in the 35th Toronto International Film Festival as part of the program at this year's festival. Great films premiers like Darren Aronofsky's latest, Robert Redford's film, Ben Affleck's The Town, Ryan Reynolds's buried; it’s Kind of a Funny Story, Never Let Me Go and Michael Winterbottom's new film have been chosen for this year’s festival.

Various film-makers like Werner Herzog, Robert Redford, Michael Winterbottom, Errol Morris, Guillaume Canet, John Cameron Mitchell, Ondi Timoner, Kiran Rao, Mike Mills, Susanne Bier, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, Ben Affleck, Francois Ozon, Andrucha Waddington, Darren Aronofsky, Alain Corneau, Kim Longinotto, Stephen Frears, Frederick Wiseman, Woody Allen, Sylvain Chomet, Charles Ferguson, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Tran Anh Hung, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Mike Leigh, Julian Schnabel and Im Sang-Soo are nominated in this festival.

“Score” movie focuses on Seventeen-year old Farley (Noah Reid) who has the stick-handling skills of the next Sidney Crosby. Farley is selected as a hockey-player and achieves instant stardom when he is signed by a junior league team. Farley loves to play shinny with the local rink rats much to his parents’ chagrin (Newton-John, Jordan). He soon discovers that stardom comes with a price – including the expectation to fight on the ice.

The Bang Bang Club movie is a riveting drama based on the true-life experiences of four struggling photographers, Greg Marinovich, Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek and Joao Silva, in South Africa. In this movie, photographs captured by these four photographers of the final bloody days of white rule in South Africa and achieved international fame and local notoriety for capturing violent images. Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman, Taylor Kitsch, Neels Van Jaarsveld and Frank Rautenbach are the stars of this movie.

Barney’s Version: Richard J. Lewis, Canada/Italy North American Premiere

Barney’s Version is based on the prize winning comic novel of Mordecai Richler. Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) is an ordinary man who lives an unusual life. Barney’s candid confessional spans four decades and two continents, and a reckless life of Barney highlighted by three marriages, two children and status as a "person of interest" in the mysterious disappearance of his friend.

Black Swan: Darren Aronofsky, USA North American Premiere

Black Swan is a story of Nina (Portman), a female ballet-dancer, finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company. She lives with her compulsive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. The movie Black Swan takes thrilling turn and at times terrifying journey the duplicitous swan queen role is done by young ballerina turns out to be a part for which she becomes terrifyingly perfect. Swan Lake requires dancers who can do both of roles, the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Black Swan stars Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder.

Casino Jack: George Hickenlooper, Canada World Premiere

Casino Jack is a true story based on the career of Jack Abramoff (Kevin Spacey), a businessman, lobbyist and con artist. Former high-powered lobbyist has bribery plans and deceitful dealings with Indian casinos due to these schemes he landed in prison, and amazed the world. Since Watergate, it remains the biggest scandal to hit Washington, D.C. The film also stars Barry Pepper, Kelly Preston, Rachelle Lefevre and Jon Lovitz.

The Conspirator: Robert Redford, USA World Premiere

The Conspirator was directed by Robert Redford and tells the story of Mary Surratt, the only female co-conspirator charged in the Abraham Lincoln murder and the United States federal government hangs the first woman. The movie stars Robin Wright Penn, James McAvoy, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Jonathan Groff, Tom Wilkinson, Alexis Bledel, Kevin Kline, and Toby Kebbell.

The Debt: John Madden, USA North American Premiere

The Debt movie is directed by John Madden. In 1965, three young Israeli Mossad agents named Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain and Sam Worthington, on a secret mission capture and kill a disreputable Nazi war criminal. The secret of the case comes out after thirty years and a man claiming to be the Nazi has surfaced in the Ukraine and one of the former agents must go back undercover to seek out the truth.

The Housemaid: Im Sang-Soo, South Korea North American Premiere

The Housemaid of upper-class family becomes tangled in a risky tryst. The story of the movie is about revenge and retribution. Eun-yi is a middle-aged divorcee woman hired as an upper class family housemaid. The master of the house takes advantage of his social position by slipping into her sheets. Maggie Lee of The Hollywood Reporter called the film "a flamingly sexy soap opera whose satire on high society is sometimes as savage as Claude Chabrol's La Cérémonie."

Janie Jones: David M. Rosenthal, USA World Premiere

The story of Janie Jones focuses on a young girl (Breslin) forsaken by her drug-addicted, former-groupie mother (Shue) at a concert. The girl surprises the fading rock singer who's performing (Nivola) with news that she is his daughter.The movie's stars are Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Shue, Abigail Breslin, Frank Whaley and Brittany Snow.

The King’s Speech: Tom Hooper, United Kingdom/Australia North American Premiere

The King’s Speech movie is the story of the man who becomes King George VI, who was the father of the current Queen of England, Freddie Mercury, Elizabeth II. George Bertie VI (Colin Firth) unwillingly assumes the throne after his brother renounce. George had to step up to the plate and do all the king stuff that England would need due to George VI’s older brother decided not to continue on as king. Unfortunately, during a speech impediment (ah, inbreeding), George had become nervous so he had to enlist the services Lionel Logue, a speech therapist, who used unorthodox techniques to help the king overcome his embarrassing problem.
