It belongs to the family of herbs called Lamiaceae. The name derives from the Latin name rosmarinus, which is from "dew" (ros) and "sea" (marinus). It bears narrow, thick, needle-like green leaves and pale blue to violet flowers. The leaves have a pungent, slightly bitter taste and a tea like fragrance.
