Is Vibrating Pill boon in constipation?

FaceBookTwitter

The high-tech device, vibrating capsule is especially made for treatment of constipation. This device is planned to vibrate, jolt and roll when it passes through the bowel after gulping. Vibrating capsule is powered by battery. It activates the wave of movement and motivates the muscles by which the natural movements in the bowel are driven for easing constipation. Next month, the vibrating pill will be examined in human trials. According to the researchers, the single-use capsule has no side effects for the condition and in this way, it differs from other treatments.

Poor diet, lack of exercise or certain medications are the general causes of constipation. In comparison to men, twice as many women suffer from constipation. Constipation is also more common with age; aged people are affected five times more in comparison to young people. The condition of constipation becomes worse when the bowel becomes constipated and this decelerates its muscular contractions. The process of working of this device is unclear while one theory of this device is that during constipation; the muscles go into spasm and massage them to help in relaxing.

As per the suggestion of earlier studies, muscles in the bowel wall can be motivated by the help of external massage on the abdomen. This can start peristalsis, the natural waves of harmonized muscle movements by which food is pushed through the digestive tract. But, this method is hard, long, and can be ineffective in patients, who have a thick or muscular abdominal wall. An Israeli-based company, Vibrant developed this new device that starts natural movement of the bowel and also help in disintegrating compacted stools.

30 patients of the registered U.S. National Institutes of Health will be provided with a 15.5mm long capsule to gulp in a new trial that will start in next month. The weight of the capsule is 10 g, approximately similar weight to a pound coin (9.5g). A little electrical motor and micro-battery are inside the tubular casing. The motor contains an off centre weight connected to it, by which it becomes rotate, vibrate, jolt and setting up a vibrating motion when it is switched on.

After six hours of its swallowing, the capsule is planned to mechanically begin vibrating because it is the expected time that will be taken by it to reach the bowel. It vibrates for two hours previous to its excreted. The patients will be observed by the conductors of the trial, Researchers from Ichilov hospital in Tel Aviv, Israel. Researchers will test this capsule in a second trial of 30 patients after confirming first test safe. After that, these patients will be examined for two weeks.

If the problem continues, thought is that more capsules could be used over time. As per Dr Ian McNeil, consultant gastroenterologist at Ealing Hospital NHS Trust, vibrating pill is an attention-grabbing and new move toward to constipation. According to Daily Mail, “It is too early to say whether it will prove effective, but we look forward to seeing the data.”
